Multi Group Fighter Sweep

Is it possible to conduct a multi-group fighter sweep where ALL the aircraft are involved in any combat at the same time. I have ~ 5 groups flying from the same base reporting to the same air HQ (also in the same hex) and these boys fly the sweep piecemeal, one group at a time while the defending base puts up it's entire fighter contingent each time. I should outnumber them, but having the groups go in individually, they get mauled individually ... ?

You don't control it;
I have seen it happening, but chances are very low; once in a while you will hit the jackpot and get multiple groups sweeping together, most of the times it will be piecemeal

Distance is one factor, given that the fighters cruise at different speeds they will separate more at longer distances. Weather is another variable. Even if it is good at the launch base and the target, enroute weather can scatter the units as they dodge clouds and high winds. I don't know all the variables they built into the dice rolls but they sure seem to have taken a lot of things into account in designing the air combat models.

PS - another thought - the ability to navigate to target accurately may also be affected by AIR skill or overall EXPERIENCE. At Midway the various groups got separated even though they had the same info on the expected location of the Japanese fleet.

Hello Scout1,

My idea :

To defend your base = use CAP or LRCAP 100%

To make a sweep on a enemy base = send some bombers, at the best altitude for your fighters (like 15000) airfield attack and all fighters in Escort role at same altitude

Cheers

fighters in Escort role

Um, fighters in the escort role usually don't perform too well in combat as their priority is to defend the bombers. Better to use multiple sweeps to wear down his CAP.

You can try this unorthodox technique and see if it works for you:

While it's occasionally useful, often it is better that these groups come in individually. You wear the CAP down much more this way. Often a "cooperating" sweep of several groups will terminate combat very early, only downing a handful of planes even if getting good odds.

Well I do believe I am wearing them down .... their fighters are dropping mine at the rate of over 2 to 1 with the piecemeal sweeps .... Gotta be tiring shooting down all those planes .....[:(]

There are other options such as hitting an adjacent base and tangling with just a portion of the CAP 'bleed over', unless his CAP is at 0 range. Also you could hit other bases that are not as heavily defended. Its not easy to heavily defend everything. Or you could simply wait until you could bring enough force to bear, in order to tip the balance in your favor.

Put your best fighters on sweep and then try to set a few squadrons of secondary fighters on LRCAP over the target hex. This is my standard operation procedure and has been successful for me. Sometimes the LRCAP does not show up but usually there is some there to support every unit that sweeps.
