game works 100% out of the box on windows 10 64bit on home and pro version with no files needing altering apart from those shown above, run as admin is all the game needs to run and work[&o]

Ok that`s good news....Running well on my Win 8.1....but I had to change my PC time format.
Something about this game that keeps me coming back from time to time. would love to see a new version.

i have done all this now but as soon as i hit play - it goes briefly black and then crashes back to desktop

its quite strange what it is doing - well i guess not strange, just headscratching - i hit play, scratch flashes black as if to start game, but then flashes back to desktop, then maybe another brief flash to black, but then back to desktop

i cannot for the life of me understand why this particular game is doing this, it worked fine for me under windows 7, but now having upgraded last month, it is doing this - even after i followed your listed steps for a reinstall

could this be the language isssue or something? i live in australia and have English (australian) as my computers language

so you have uninstalled the game?

as you have a upgraded to windows 10 version correct?

and followed all above and still it doesn't work for you?

what i'm trying to find out is, if it's already on the pc, and the pc got upgraded, and you have just tried to play it, it may not work, as the codec's and Direct X files are different, but if it's a new install of the game, following the guides above it should work fine, if it doesn't, i need a DXD report to see what's happening.

How to get a DxDiag report file:

1. Click on "START" (on Windows 8 press “Windows key” and the “R” key at the same time)
2. Click "run" (skip this step on Windows 8 )
3. Type in "dxdiag" and click "OK"
4. Check through the tabs and perform all tests
5. Click "Save all Information..." and save the text file to a location of your choice

We prefer that DxDiag files be posted as message attachments (zip) rather than pasted into the body of the post.

add the exe of the game to your Anti Virus and firewall program, to make sure check the logs of these to see if it was one if any of them was to blame.

That usually means a 3rd party program, like an Internet security programs, is or could be interfering with the game or update installation.

run the game from a admin account and use full admin permissions.

please make sure all game pre requisite are installed with the game, even if you think or fully know there are already installed, it will only over write, and it may be that you have a older or newer version of these where as the game in question may need a certain version.

please make sure you are running the latest game version and have up to date drivers installed on your pc,

If you have the original version. So you'll need to update it from the Internet.
Please note that you'll only need the last update, as the updates are comprehensive. (not needed with steam)

yes i have done all these steps - i had ostfront on the laptop already when i upgraded and it didnt work, so i uninstalled and reinstalled just a moment added in all the settings as you described, but still just a brief black screen and i am back to desktop. I was trying this from a full admin state, ie uac off and local security policy settings disabled, but still no go

attahced is my dxdiag, - i havent look at this and i guess i dont really know what i am looking for, but if there is anything you can see which may explain things, that would be great

all i can see on this is your using an older version of windows, Threshold 2 build, which has been replaced and updated to the Anniversary Update or what's known as "Redstone" (RS1)), was released on August 2, 2016 as fixes a lot of bugs that the build your on uses.

what to do now, imo a fresh install of windows is better than a upgraded version, but that may not fix the issue you have also atm, so you can either wait for the new version to download and install, or try and fix the issue your having, which may or may not work.

now you have a upgrade, your pc is licienced for windows 10, so as long as you don't change too much hardware, a fresh install of a new ISO image from M/S won't need a keep either, as M/S servers keep a copy of your hardware when you upgraded.

regarding your report, you have a dual GPU pc, so a Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600 + a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M in your laptop, you need to go into Nvidia tools and make sure the default is the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M so the game knows to use it and not the GPU on the CPU

Open the Nvidia Control Panel and locate Manage 3D Settings. Change, in both Global and Program, the Preferred Graphics Processor to High Performance NVIDIA Processor.

regarding temp files and swap files, and other hard driver users of your O/S, more is always better than less, not really a issue atm, but if you have upgraded you also could gain some back by running a cleaning tool / program built into windows to claw back some

you have a lot of codec's on the pc, most will be either dupes or some may be broken as well, as not all codec programs which add new ones repair or update the ones you have and some leave older dupes on the pc as well, unused until a program tries to use it, then errors because of it's broken on no longer in use etc or not the correct version for the O/S in use.

so don't use the shortcut auto run and go straight to the game exe and make a new shortcut then and re try that, it may work it may not...

so my opinion is you have more than one issue, most if not all will be fixed with a fresh clean install, yes not a great solution for a old game, but to fix it in other ways means a user needs to be in front on the pc, looking to see what errors and what is loaded to disable and retry.

for me a clean load, so the least amount of background apps and programs running is better than a load of clutter, then see what does work and what doesn't, as some apps and programs don't like to run with others, it's that simple, but finding out what is the hard and long part.

a clean installs gives you a chance of a clean slate and start, load only what you use, and not something that you may have used a few years ago that may still load every boot.

I wouldn't expect it to be a language issue. The person who did most of the programming for PCO is in Australia.

Make sure you go through the configuration settings I think Zak shows this in step 12 -13. You can try setting to your native desktop screen resolution (or just try 1024 x 768 or 1366 x 768 ).

Also, if you get to the point where game actually starts there is a log file generated. You might take a look at that. The log file is located in the games log folder (see attached screen). The log file is a text file that has the date as part of the name. You can open with notepad or some other text reader. You could post it and I can take a look.
