Just downloded 3.3, unzipped it and as there is no install just ran it from the folder. The splash screen comes up, but nothing else happens, any ideas?

Cheers

All versions, including 3.3, run OK on my desktop in XP, my problems have been with graphics resolution settings on other PCs. The desktop, with Geforce 4 card has, 190 graphic mode settings, one of which must be OK for WIR, My laptop, with SiS graphics chipset, only has 6 resolution modes all running at 60 Hz, which is no good for WIR, or it does not support the older EGA format (problem with some newer graphics cards). I don't know what the update rate for WIR is, but for me it seems that you need a grahics capability with the widest range possible and hope that one will suit WIR. Also see other posts in this forum and the Matrix PAC War forum, on progam compatability memory settings, which may help.

Thanks, what resolution do you run at? I have a Geforce 4 440 so lots of resolutions to choose from...

I have tried the PACWAR hints, still not getting past the initial wallpaper. How long does it normally stay up?

Using MEM /C I have

Conventional total free 615.6k
Upper Free 66.5k
Largest continuous free is 614.7k

The splash screen loads and thats it.

I think you have to free more conventional memory.

My values are:
Conventional total free: 632.9 kb
Upper free 51.7 kb
Largest continous free 579.6 kb

Try to close all programs which run in the background and delete all unnecessary windows startup programs (there are so many which i don't installed, so i don't know their names :) ).

Maybe that helps

Well it worked ok first time on my WIN2K laptop, so it looks like I'll have to play it there.

FYI: WIR is a DOS app that runs in the standard EGA 640x350x16 mode. All the other high resolutions and refresh rates your video card can do is absolutely irrelevent. The only thing that matters is how well your video card emulates/supports the EGA standard resolution.

Thanks Ed, the problem is trying to make sense of what is going on in these cursed micro-chips. I gave up on the laptop and got hold of an old notepad that was about to be junked, but it does support EGA and runs WIR. Thank God for redundant equipment.:)
