Combat sound effects

Hi there, I just bought this game on steam and I like it but when I perform an attack it goes
to the combat resolution screen and there are only a second or two of sound effects. I have the
message level set to four and was expecting the battle sounds to last until the combat is resolved.
Can you tell me if this is a bug or the way the game was designed and if so what are all the
mapmode combat wavs for? I would like to mod the sounds to last longer if that is possible.
