So this is a Focus Pacific Mod that seems pretty bleeding-edge. Para and GP were asking for someone to work the side of Japan over and kick the tires. So I kinda feel like kicking a tire or three <grin>.

We started an initial T1 but I 4got to set the Unit Withdrawals off... I just kicked out a 2nd T1 that is @ least really-really close to my 1st one. I might-coulda 4got a couple of clicks but I think I was pretty close.

So in this mod there is lotsa, what feels to me like, crazy additions for Japan. First of all, Russia has oil. Lotsa oil... I'm gunna get me some.

I'm going after subs on turn 1 plus a normal attack of PH with an enhanced KB.

I'll post random things that I find in the mod but it really looks like a Japanese fanboy mod from what I can see.

So check this out! I so have to put together a SCTF with these... [:D]

It really isn't a fan boy mod, but rather one which attempts to (ahistorically) make the war more balanced for both sides. I've been following an aar which extended to around march/April and it's no picnic for the Japanese. With the Soviets active from day one, plus the new P-50s and French aircraft you're going to face a much, much harder early air campaign. Plan on losing a lot of fighters especially. The version I saw had serious resource shortfalls (to the extent of needing to shut off most naval construction in early '42) because of the need for massive factory buildups, but there have been some attempts to rebalance that. You're going to be fighting an intense many front war from day one, and while your navy is definitely better than stock there are many new allied toys too.

I'm excited to see it though, and I wish you luck.

I wonder if you sweeps might have been more effective set to a lower altitude. While altitude is king, maneuver bands help. Since you were out numbered in most, it probably would not matter much.

So the Russian Front:

I've got the 6th and 20th Armies moving up from Hailar to Chita.

I'm gathering a strong force heavy in infantry divisions to punch across towards Voroshilov.

The 4th & 53rd Divisions @ Osaka are planning for Petropavlovsk and loading aboard an amphibious TF.

I will be sweeping hard and fast going after the Russian fighters and then trying to close down their air fields.

I'll be going for oil from Russia ASAP as that is the closest spigot to my home islands.

So the Russian Front:

That's where I'm planning my offensive too. What is your stance on China right now? I'm sending the SNLF forces to Shanghai to use for elsewhere but otherwise I'm thinking of going into a holding pattern. I'm thinking of pulling as much out of China while not having to give up ground and send those troops to the Russian front.

I'm gunna drive hard and fast in China too.

In Burma I need to capture enough to reduce supplies to China.

My uppercut is gunna start way down at the knees of China and come up to the chin of Chungking.

For Russia I want to strip them of their fighters and pound the crap outta them while throttling supplies to that big glug of troops down near the port of Vladivostok.

All of this on top of still going for the DEI in a big way... We have all of those troops so I'm gunna use them. I'm not so concerned about oil/fuel with so much available in Russia and the DEI. I'm freaking a bit about the resource numbers... But the whole point was to push hard and see if it breaks... We'll see. There is a lot of resources on the map, I just want to be smart in setting up the convoys. I was looking at the Russian fighters... Most of 'em have armor... And the Mig just hurts my feelings... lol.

Regarding Air Combat
Air combat has been staggering. I went in expecting my Zeros to kick arse - especially against the Russian & French AC… None of my sweep coordinate. I mean none… The only coordination I see sometimes is between bombers and bombers and/or fighters. I'm gunna have to knock down the airfields instead of expecting my zeroes to trash his fighters. It is weird to see these French and Russian AC going toe-2-toe with the Zero and come out ahead or break even.
This is not the aerial cake-walk I was expecting.

I've got 6 divisions ear-marked for Malaya.

I'm pushing the 15th Army up to Burma.

China I've got a lot of garrison troops so I'm moving square pegs into square holes.

KB is headed home now after 2 days of attacks.

My troops have arrived @ Hong Kong.

And look who I bagged trying to make a run along the northern coast of Borneo...

That's what I was trying to tell you. The early allied fighters are much, much better than stock. In particular the P-50 is able to perform high altitude sweeps and get the dive bonus and it is extremely effective. If you can find where he bases these you night want to bomb their bases, since they will be hard to beat on the attack.

don't know this mod, but ....

MIG3 is almost 400mph fighter ... it can hold its own with good pilots against anything the IJ has, even late war. the rest of the SOV early fighters are worthless.

You know those H83's of the Chinese are also pretty good fighters too.

John 3rd can tell you a series of sob stories about how well my well trained fighter force does against him. [:D] This mod is based on his and my mods which use DBB air data. If the pilot quality is relatively close, the P-39/40s can hold there own. My P-38s are just plane nasty which you will find out soon enough in our game. <rubs hand gleefully>

Yup - I'll be using a hammer on the bases now. I've taken pretty tough losses with my fighters so I need to consolidate and rebuild air groups. Pound the bases and kill 'em on the ground + insure he can't launch fighters from his airfields. I need to turn his runways into swill cheese.

I'll need to concentrate my aerial assets at the start plus ramp up production with the fighters. I've already lost more fighters than I want simply by throwing the A6M2 at bases where they were outnumbered, often by 3:1 or better.

On top of the Soviet aircraft proper pretty much being all centreline guns all the time, it's magnified by the ShKAS being pretty weird - it's a sort of mini revolver cannon thing with a fire rate about twice that of the 'normal' aircraft MGs of the time, and since aircraft weapon accuracy is at least in large part based on rate of fire, you get a pretty effective weapon! I was going to say one ShKAS is functionally equivalent to two regular MGs, which is probably a bit much, but certainly it is (and should be) more effective than 1-1.

Based upon those numbers, the designers of the mod must have felt that the sync on those particular (7.62) guns was really good. On c/l guns its all about matching the gun recoil to the prop speed.
It would appear on those 7.62's that the match was really good. That was the problem with the 50 cal for the allies. A great gun, no question, but it didn't sync well with the prop speeds they were using,
so the guns had to go into the wings ... and then use a convergence zone ... clearly when you hit a target at the convergence point, 6 (or 8 with the TBolt) 50 cal does a lot of damage in a hurry.

But, it is a lot harder to do. C/L is a lot easier, hence more accurate over the long run.

Game date is 14 DEC 41 and I just sent the turn to Bruce.

Air combat in the PI, @ Kwangchowan, and at the Russian front has been kicking my arse. My main problem are the bi-planes of France and Russia. They almost all have 4 center-mounted guns with a high accuracy rating. I could probably get past that but they are all armored also. The truth is that my Army fighters can't stand up cuz they have no armor and their primary weapons can't punch through the armor level 1 rating… This would be close to a walk in Russia IF my Zeroes performed like they normally do in any other mod. The Migs from Russia are a superior aircraft. And the Allied Sky Rocket used in the PI takes out maybe 3 to 4 Zeroes for everyone he loses. So Oscars are just a snack. If I could control the air my bombers would be eating his soul in Russia and Malaya. Right now in Kwangchowan my mouse-over shows 153 fighters. That's probably some roll-over from Hong Kong but still that’s a lotta fighters. And when my sweeps go in uncoordinated my Zeroes see something like 3:1 odds against them…

Bruce has offered a house rule where he'll not use his bi-planes on offense anymore but the damage is already done as I've lost almost 50% of my fighters.

So @ this point - no sweeps from me; that's a no-win situation. I'm marching divisions of troops to cut off the rails to the North in Russia.

In Malays I'm running about 8 divisions down to Singapore. And I'm filling my air fields with air support engineers as I'll be pounding Singapore AF to try and cut his air support and stop forts from building any stronger than they are now.

In the PI I'll push engineers to the bases I have, bring KB across for air support, and add divisions to my ground battle. And I'll begin working the airfields to stop forts and kill his air support.

I'm just not able to do everything at once with my fighter levels so I'll be rotating my air assets from one location to another - like playing whack-a-mole.

The accuracy *seems* high to me also - I mean it's higher than the center-mounted weapons on the Oscar and Zero too. But my 12.7 weapons rarely punch through the armor-1 rating... We've got a house rule in place to try and cut back on the pain but we can't change anything in the current game.

I'll just push on and see what I can do to get past the pain... <grin>.

Also, I've caught up with the Bruce's 8th Indian Brigade that had been @ Kota Bharu, thanks to some aggressive air-2-ground attacks.

Wake
I had a nice 4BB/3BC Bombardment TF hit Wake on the 16th. I'm gunna rinse-n-repeat on the 17th and the two units I have on Wake, the Maizuru 2nd SNLF & the 150th Indian Mixed Bde do a deliberate attack.
Meanwhile I have the 140th Indian Mixed Bde in route on TF19 to Wake and maybe 2 days out.

I'm attacking Laoag this turn. I'm consolidating my fighters @ Vigan. SkyRockets kick butt - I've got nothing that can stand up to them but sheer numbers.

Russia
I'm about 3-4 days out on invading Petropavlovsk. KB will supply air support. My primary thrust north is going unopposed. My secondary thrust to the north is receiving attention from Bruce's air units.

Malaya
I'm attacking Georgetown this turn. Everything is funneling down towards Singapore.

China
I've two divisions in Wuchow and they will attack this turn. It looks like the allied units currently at the base are in movement. I'm hoping to catch them in that phase.

On the road between Lang Son & Nanning my 254th Division caught the 52nd Chinese Corps at 2:1 odds and forced them to retreat. So the 254th will follow the retreating enemy as they drive to Nanning.

The 21st Indian Mixed Bde @ Hanoi is marching along the same route but will jog south once the pass the border and head for Pakhoi.

When I played this, several iterations ago against commander-cody I did not try to fight plane to plane.

Rather I used the IJN to bombard that French Base and then swept and finally bombed. In fact that was my preferred method of subduing his air power, which I felt I did a good job with. French planes there are really tough...so I decided to not really fight fair.

I almost never used Oscars to sweep but rather used Zeroes in that role and in heavy numbers and at first I tried to catch the bleeding CAP before hitting his strong points. And when I went in, I swept with huge numbers. I seem to recall shifting a ton of Zeroes from Saigon area to destroy the French, and then back to win Singers.

In fact, I concentrated first on Luzon, 2nd on the French, and 3rd on Singers. Since I was hitting him with overwhelming numbers it didn't take too long, plus he fought back rather than retreat away from Luzon.

I had such a huge advantage in pilot training...some of the Zero squadrons had all elite pilots. I risked subs in dangerous waters to always have a chance at rescuing pilots.

A lot may have changed by now...well, the Russians were quiet in my game -- but I was maneuvering to take them out when we called the game. Was a blast though!

I have always wondered if there are enough supplies in Russia for prolonged fighting from day 1.
