First impression

First 5 minutes:
Pros: Easy installation
Nice splash screen
Nice map
Cons: OMG! I can’t use WASD to move the map around. I have to use the arrows keys and I can’t remap. This is a huge detractor for me. My hands are so used to being on WASD. This is a huge UI/ergonomics issue for me. It definitely limits my playing time due to the annoyance factor.
UI snap back on delay after moving the map.
Waiting to deselect a unit before the map updates.
NM?
First 30 minutes:
German campaign all default.
Pros: Invasion of Poland feels correct.
France and Canada DOW first turn. The report gave a recommendation to intercept convoys. I would like to see more of these recommendations.
Poland conquered in three turns.
I like the river indicator (and such) in the pre-combat box.
Cons: Moving mouse to the top tabs caused the map to jump and the tabs to disappear. Lots of time spent waiting for tabs to reappear.
HQ do what exactly?
What are all of the other letters in the pre-combat box?
MPPs on the map didn’t update when I purchased something. They updated after closing the sub-section.
First hour:
Spent time reading the manual.
Some questions above answered.
Time to reposition forces to take France. OMG, they are moving so slow. Oh wait, if I double click I can move them further, but now they are behind the time line. Alright, forces in place to invade Norway and Denmark. OMG, I can just pay to take Norway and Denmark. Grrrrrr. Ok. Repositioning forces again. Can I DOW or do I wait for a question screen? Ok, I’ll wait. Hmmmm. Now June 1940. Oh, I have to go the map screen to DOW, not the diplomacy screen. This makes sense? Ok, I see all of these event messages showing up, but when I click on them, they are gone. I go to the reports sub-section, but it looks like excel. It would be nice to see the reports more in detail to see if they are flavor or if they do something or have recommendations. Ok, let try to invade France. I go through the forest and the French are waiting for me. Alright time to do the write up and start a new game.
My initial impression is good, but the ergonomics/UI takes away from the immersion and just one more turnness some games have. I would like to see in the manual a list of key events laid out so I don’t try to invade Denmark/Norway only to find out I could just pay. This makes me question all of my decisions because I don’t know if there is a key game play mechanic around the bend that I don’t know about.
