Photoshop 6 Method for merging images

Just reloaded Photoshop 6 and want to create some new "load" screens. I am familiar "with the concept" of layers, but the physical execution for
a) starting with two images
b) copying one to the other (I stumbled upon a method to do this)
c) re-sizing one of them to match the other ... don't know how to do
d) merging the images (don't know this either).....
Never had a proper manual and the on-line help leaves a bit to be desired. tried you tube but most of what I found is for more recent versions ....
Just looking for a jumpstart .....
