Report (September 1942)
Axis Intermediate + 0.5 Experience Handicap
The below is some beta feedback on Balance and some notes on AI
Poland: The attack on Poland felt right. German Armour ripped through the Poles and their was no answer for German air power. Conquest was easily 3 turns and can probably be pushed to 2.
France: My attack on the Low Countries/France commenced in March 1940, resulting in French defeat in August 1940. My Paratroopers (3 as I built an extra) were out of place as I expected to need to take Norway. With the extra mobile forces and perhaps utilization of motorized tech I could see French surrender being completed at least a month faster with some experience as I remember spending a whole turn just grinding down the Paris Garrison.
Yugoslavia: Can be defeated in 1 turn and served as good distraction to delay Barbarossa as historical.
Greece: The Italians have a very hard path to victory here without German support. I'm not sure if Greece will eventually declare for the Allies if Italy doesn't DOW. I DOW as per decision event and found that the Italians have almost zero chance to take Greece alone which felt right.
USSR: Was able to move very deep into Russia in 1941 beginning May 1491. By December 1941 I had reached the gates of Leningrad in the North, captured Smolensk in the Center, While in the South I captured Kharkov and Kursk but was held outside of Rostov until Spring 1942. It is now September 1942 I have captured Leningrad in the North, I am fighting in the streets to take the other half of Moscow and in the South I am battling to cross the Don Major River towards Stalingrad.
Egypt: I have captured Egypt and am pushing towards Syria right now. The battle for Egypt was a bit too easy. Italy was already winning a grinding battle at El Alemein all on it's own and with Rommel showing up it was game over. The UK really needs some offensive punch early on to push the Italians back in North Africa as I was fought absolutely no battles in the Theater West of El Alamein.
Atlantic: 6 Submarine Groups remain in the Atlantic, Convoy Loses and Sub/Raid losses are pretty even according to the charts. Given that the Allied protectors losses are not accounted for in the charts I would say this is a net gain for Germany.
Mediterranean: The Allies should press the Italian Navy early prior to strengthening and while so many other priorities for Italy come ahead (transporting troops etc.). Italy is not that bad of a Major if you always get to do everything 1 step at a time. The Allied AI has to take advantage of Italy quickly for success.
Some general comments on the AI:
I understand that USSR can not Garrison every supply center in 1941 but the following open cities I noted as strangely empty:
Talinn - An Industrial center had no garrison
Kharkov and Kursk - No Garrison, but Belgorod did (the town right between the two).
The climatic battle for Alexandria ended with a Garrison in the city being defeated while stronger units stood outside the city walls. I would like to see the Garrison unit removed from Egypt so that the AI doesn't give up one of it's 2 main cities in Egypt so easily.
A great many of Allied Air fleets were destroyed in constant retreat Northwards towards Syria after Egypt's surrender. These units should have operated out of the theater instead I would think.
The USSR is very passive, even in early 1942 when USSR had 90+ ground forces, they did not press attacks. USSR also remains far behind on the Infantry Tech tree. The USSR AI must prioritize infantry tech early to succeed.
Other thoughts on USSR:
No concentrated focus in USSR: As the Axis it seems I have been able to put equal importance on the North/Center/South and focus on capturing all cities along the way. Now that Leningrad is in my hands things will go down hill for the USSR as I can move downward destroying the defensive lines. Why is there no focus on Fall Blau? 1942 should have the clear objective of Capturing Stalingrad and Oil. To solidify this objective in the game I would suggest ongoing supply problems in Germany due to Oil Shortages if objectives (Oil fields) remain in Allied Hands.
