Linux Install Guide for WITP AE

First you will need to have Wine and Play on Linux installed. Some distributions come with it already loaded. If not add from your software center or synaptic package manger program.

Depending upon your software manager, you might just need to install Play on Linux and it will automatically install Wine for you.

That should be very easy.[:)]

Then start Play on Linux. It should start in a window like this...

Here you can see I already have one game installed, but yet I am playing two and the second is a DaIronBabes game...so a clean 2nd install of the game makes a lot of sense for me.

Follow along...

You know, before I go any further, is this guide better place in General or here in Tech Support?

I think here is where I would look for it, but I know some people have a very definite view that this really should only be for technical technical support....

I'd be fascinated to read all this as I'd love to escape having to use Windows on my Mac with all the rubbish that goes with it.

I think this is a good place for it. Michaelm can see by the topic that it is not a bug report.

Ok, you have play on linux running, click on install a program or install...two choices takes you to the same place.

Here.

Choose that you want to install a program.

You will use Edit choice below when you repeat these steps installing the latest official update and the beta patch.

This opens up a new window,

There will be long list of programs but no WITP AE. What heathens.

That is ok, in the lower left click on install a non-listed program.

Using temagic's list [&o], go ahead and check them off one by one until you are done.

Double check.

Triple check.

Wow, look at that.

Follow the installer's routine.

Let's see. You accepted the EULA, let the installer pick the directory, entered your key, and installed the game...

Next up we need to choose a file to make a shortcut to.

Now I name my shortcut...

I have the option of naming and selecting more shortcuts should I so desire...I don't.

And I am done.

Play on Linux now looks like this, all I need to do is select Jocke's game and run.

But what about the switches, Lowpe?

Okay...

To get fullscreen support and add switches, edit the Witp:AE shortcut-file in

/home/username/.PlayOnLinux/shortcuts/ (you may need to press "control h" to reveal the hidden files in the username folder)

and add the -px -py parameters after "War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" and any other switches you want to play around with making sure to leave the two characters at the end of the line.

so that it reads:

POL_Wine "War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -px1280 -py800 $@

Another example:
POL_Wine "War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -w -pxf1920 -pyf1018 -multiaudio -cpu2 -dd_sw "$@"

Important add: I strongly suggest you try running the game in either -w or -f (windowed or full) mode first to see if the program works. The px and py or pxf and pyf listed in the two examples might now work with your computer.

You can check the display information for your monitor and use those too. Play with the switches once you have the game up and running to avoid frustration.

Also, check your system settings information and find out what your graphics card is and what driver you are using. Not all Linux distributions are equal here and you may need to install a driver or select the driver since sometimes your Linux distribution will use a safe, stable and underperforming open source driver rather than the latest and greatest from Nvidia. So check.

You can use any text editor to do this make the corrections and make sure you save the file before closing the program.

That all looks quite simple thank you, but the very first step of Wine and Linux install is probably so simple because you are used to it, but for anyone new to it there is the initial stumbling block, can you explain precisely how to do those please?

Also once up and running, how do you?

1. Save a file and either send it to your opponent, or get a file from your opponent and put it into the game?
2. Install any update or mods etc?
3. How do you install things like Tracker?

Thx

Roger
