In my Allied game I am currently getting my butt kicked - not an uncommon happening mind you - but I found the ability of the Axis air units to kill my ground forces too much. So I took FOW off and found the Germans in late 1943 had just achieved level 5 for their air and their tanks were level 4.
Might just be the luck of the draw of course, but that seems a bit out of line. the USA just hit 4 and England is at 3 right now in air power. Armor USA at 3 and England at 2.
This (and all my mistakes!) helps explain how the Germans easily took all of the middle east and are deep into Russia right now.

What difficulty level. That can change things a lot.

I'm playing on the easy level because that's all I can deal with presently. At this point it's January of '44. The Russians are still holding on, barely. The western allies have landed in France and much to my shock and surprise have done pretty well so far. Landed in Southern France, have cut off Brittany and Normandy now. Have killed one Panzer unit but the AI (after about 3 or 4 turns) seems to be waking up and transferring more units in to oppose me.
I do like how the invasions work in this game, much better than the older versions and those long range Amphip units rock!!
Now the US has level 4 air units and Briton has just hit 4. Love to hear the Germans at level 5 jet in to destroy me. They are really and literally killing it in Russia, so far in the west I'm doing ok with that huge airforce I've got sitting in the UK.
I am enjoying the game and don't seem to have found any more bugs. But the jumpy map thing is annoying. Otherwise this game ROCKS!

I could be wrong but I think the research scales up. It isn't a luck roll that you get it or you don't. It is an incremental movement to prevent extreme luck in the game. But if the Axis A.I. constantly stacked research into planes... which I would as the Axis... then they could get that high in tech while suffering in other areas of less concern.
