I own Distant world and 2 Expansions (Legend/RtShakturi) did not get into the game at first and now returning to try it again

My questions do I need to get Universe to access all the new features ?or latest patch of the Distant World wil do ?

You are missing the Shadows expansion, which allows you to start in pre-warp mode (just discovering/researching space travel) or to play as a pirate as well as some tech tree expansions.

The main advantage of Universe over a fully expanded original DW is the ability to create and use mods, so how much you want Universe rather than Shadows probably depends on how important mods are to you.

Yes, and Universe has all of the previous expansions included.
