Background**
For seven days savage fighting has occurred through the Ardennes
countryside as Hitler's armies make one last bid for a victory in the
west.*
*
The Fifth Panzer Army, led by General von Manteuffel, has made the
deepest penetration and is rapidly approaching the Meuse River in
Belgium. If they can cross it, the possibility of splitting allied
forces is a real threat. Four Panzer Divisions close in on Dinant
and a crossing of the Meuse.*
*
Facing them is the 84th Infantry Division, the 4th Cavalry Group,
and some odds and ends units stuffing the line. Roaring in from
the north is the "Hell on Wheels" Division, the US 2nd Armored.
From the west side of the Meuse comes the British 29th Armored
Brigade.*
*
In spite of the numerical superiority of the Allies, the Germans have
confidence in their tanking ability and the quality of their armor.*
*
The skies have cleared and the "Jabos" (US air support) roam freely.
US 7th Corps artillery masses for the onrushing panzers who are
desperate to break free of the encircling noose. About to take place
is one of the biggest armored confrontations on the west front.*
