In the manual is mentioned that fighters should be used to spot enemy units. Fine, but how?

I know how to spot naval vessels (move the CV or CVL one hex at a time, de-highlight it, repeat process) to avoid bumbing right into an enemy and stop dead, but how, for example, can I reconnoiter any inland base by air, other than by attacking it and hope for the best?

It's like attacking, just on an empty hex in the general direction you want to recon.
