I'm a massive noob so forgive me, but even though I've read the manual this just doesn't seem right.

Depleted units do not fight (along HQs), and so are not included in battle report. Perhaps for defender they should.

If you have a save from before that battle, I could use it, without the need to replicate the conditions myself.

Yeah, this unit was depleted (at 8% TOE), that's why it can't fight. On the other hand it's not a HQ nor an airbase, and so can't be relocated automatically. I will fix this, depleted units will take part in battle (though their CV will be automatically set to 0).
edit: it seems it will be easier to handle them as routed units
