I just sent the turn in for 10 DEC 41.

7 DEC 41 went well thanks to Surprise at the start of the war. I went after Clark Airfield in the PI because Bruce gets those stupid P-50 fighters (that I lose 10 Zero to a single P-50) on T2 of the game @ Clark & Hawaii (and some place on the west coast I think).

I'll get an Oscar D model in January that sports a centre-mounted 20mm cannon. I'll be losing fighters in droves. It's the way the mod is designed. The hope is that I can ramp up production to basically destroy his air power through attrition.

My Pearl Harbor attack went well. I had pounded his airfield with my DB and was hoping that the damage done his runways would make it profitable for a day-2 attack. I was wrong. I did a Day-2 attack at most of the places I'd hit on Day 1. The difference between surprise and no surprise is like night on day - hence my belief that the only way to win the air war is to wear his fighters down.

There were a few good ship battles in the South China Sea where I kinda came out on the short-sticked side but it's early in the war and Bruce made this mod so he knows where to stick it to me in the early phases.

I'll be pushing in the PI and DEI. I'll be pushing in Malays/Sumatra. I'll be pushing in Burma. And I'll be pushing in Russia. So far in Russia I'm doing well. I took out a gaggle of subs on T1. I don't think surprise mattered on that attack as Bruce had no AC @ the base or covering it.

So I attacked the ships @ Kwangchowan and found out he had mines... lol. I had three ships eat a mine. They are limping back to Sumah.

I attacked Hong Kong and drove forts down on the 9th. On the 10th I need to rest my units as supplies are deep in the red. Up above Hong Kong is an Corp HQ. I'll fly supplies to the HQ and hope they trickle down since Bruce has 36 fighters over Hong Kong. I'm also going after Hong Kong AF and Kwangchowan AF.

That Unit south of Canton - it's running west so my WAG is it'll reinforce Kwangchowan. another Chinese Corp north of Canton seems to be falling back to Wuchow. In fact all over the map it looks like Chinese troops are falling back so my WAG is he'll try to do a maggot line on tough terrain.

I'm gunna try to punch straight up from Canton while swinging the bulk of my Japanese forces low to Canton and then drive up.

Hong Kong Area
So in this screen-shot: My troops in Hong Kong have been resupplied so I'll be performing a D_ATK in Hong Kong. I'll support it with air operations out of Canton. On the map and within the label of Kwangchowan is an allied TF with a couple of AP. Hong Kong now shows a single unit so my WAG is that Bruce is moving some of the units to Kwangchowen (I think mostly support units start in Hong Kong). In the upper right you can see two division near Haiphong coming down to liberate Pakhoi and Kwangchowen.

Formosa - PI
In this screen-shot I have fighter AG out of Batan, Hengchun, and Takao to fly LRCAP over my PI invasion TFs. Things in the PI seem to be going well on this turn. My LRCAP did well in turning back most of Bruce's attacks. He'll sweep a bit and then throw large air groups of Catalina PB at my shipping. I'm also using transport air groups out of Formosa to add engineer units with air support to Aparri and Vigan.

Borneo and Celebes Sea
In this screenie you can see the exodus of Manilla to the west. In the Celebes Sea are a pair of SCTFs and another with carrier escorts that have been harvesting some of the merchies. Up near Miri I have on station an AG of Betty. Also in the area (you can only see one on this screenie) are three SCTF that I hope will engage a merchie TF or three. Merchies are a great way to build up crew experience for my warships.

Thanks. This is Bruce's mod so he should be able to get in a few stings initially. The air game is a bit tough right now but I'm hoping that the Oscar-D, which come on to the board in January, will help me right things a bit. Fighters with centre-line cannon rule!

I'll get you a turn on Friday. We returned home at a reasonable time with the Prius but some family things cropped up. Nothing bad - they just ate into my AE time...

So in this screenie you can see I'm ramping up the Zero and Betty. The Arado is a FP with a pair of 20mm Type 99 cannon that are Front mounted, giving an accuracy of 28. I'll be loading up on these for the FP carriers. Also ready for production is the long range G5N2 Liz Heavy Bomber. The Liz has a normal range of 2o and an extended range of 29 hexes. The default load is 12 250kg GP Bombs while flying extended drops the payload down to four bombs. The Liz has no armor and a SR of 4… I've also ramped up Sally-II production as that'll be my main Army MB. I've increased production on the Oscar-Ic fighter and hope that when the Oscar-Id comes on line in January that everything upgrades.

I've got a question for fellow JFBs: The Nell or Betty bomber - which one do you think is best? Do you invest anything in R&D or do you just take them as they arrive naturally?

It looks like Bruce is working to get his subs into action. He'll have plenty in my back yard - about 20 from Manilla and maybe another 30 or so from Russia. Taking that into consideration I'm converting some of my Kiso xAKL to PB. Over the next 30 days I'll pick up a pair of BC, one of which is the Admiral Lutzow.

So I'm able to tag a few merchies fleeing from Manilla. I get in a little sub action also (I-162 was impressive and when she went to guns it was fun to watch. That Captain has some gonads...)

Air combat is improving but my fighters are still holding the short end of the stick. What's good is the damage I did to Kwangchowan as it looks like the strikes I've been able to deliver against the airfield and the capture of Hong Kong will give me air superiority over here. Once I've got things locked down I can shift to the PI and then Malaya. The initial setup of the game gives the allied lotsa aircraft in the PI, Russia, lower China (Kwangchowan & Hong Kong), and Malaya. I think my mouse-over of Singapore showed something like 230 fighters... So the only thing I can do is try to shut down the airfields and drive his fighters back into the DEI. I'll take a licking during the process of shutting down the airfields but once I have, I'll have and be able to maintain air superiority. It'll be bloody though...

On the ground it's still a lot about moving units on the board. Hong Kong falls as mentioned above, and the invasion of Guam is going on.

C5M2 Babs - There is NO factory at start for your IJN recon and you will need these planes unless there is a recon version of the Kates available. Factory size is 15.

Glen - Increase factory to 15. Once you get about 100 stockpiled, convert the factory.

Nell vs Betty - I've gone exclusively to the Nell totally once the 2nd Gen (G3M3) become available. Range is 21 with TT and 26 extended. Convert Betty factories and any other Betty that is being R&D to something else. P1Y1 Frances is where any R&D efforts will go. Speed and more speed!!

If you need, you can have my latest BTS Lite file that is in mid-June 42 to see what I've done vs Gen Patton. [;)] My R&D is set up for rest of war.

I don't think Bruce has done anything to the pilot pool but I shall ask. I seem to remember the pool being increased by Michaelm in a patch due to pilot problems from a game that took place a couple of years back that hit some kind of pilot threshold. But definitely a good question - thanks!

Glens are only for subs - why a pool of 100? I think I'll build to 30 and let it dwindle down to 10 before turning back on the factory.

I was thinking Nell too, for range, but in truth with the Liz available I am planning to convert some of those Betty/Nell air groups. The Betty upgrades eventually to use those Ohka missiles sometime in mid 44 if my memory is correct. And the Betty-2e gets a gun value of 20... Plus I hate flying naval attack missions w/o fighter escorts.

For later in the war I was thinking about some of those bombers like the Kikka, with a top speed of 433 and that'll handle 800 kg bombs... [:)]

Corrected info on the Kikka - I mistakenly said it was a single-engine bomber when it fact it's a two-engine bomber.

OMG - lookit this Heavy Bomber that comes out in JAN of 45...

Armor, GV of 36, normal range of 21, SR of 5. So they are hanger queens that take a lickin' and keep on tickin'.

I want to use the Glen factory on something important like . . . FIGHTERS!!

I use Nells on NavS since there isn't enough patrol groups of Mavis/Emily.

Those Bettys aren't very fast, so what are you going with for late war fighters and bombers? Sam? George? Frank? Shinden? Does this mod give you extra factories? If not, decisions need to be made in the next few months on what to prioritize.
