Hello to all.

I'm getting more and more interested to this title, and I may well d3cide to exploit the vacations sale to purchase it.

Until now i understand that there is a physical paper game, by the Australian company, and this Matrix computerized version (which is still in development).

First question i'd like to pose: if I purchase here by matrix, do I receive a "paper" verson of the game as well? Is it subject to an additional price ("map pack")?

Finally: would it be possible to study the instructions, whetehr of the computerized or of the paper board version, anywhere?

The paper/cardboard version is made by a different company (ADG) and could be (not required) purchased separately from a different source.

The large paper maps are an optional addition, you add to the purchase of the software.

You can pay to download the game, but if you want the hard copy manuals you also need to pay for shipping. The manuals are also installed with the downloaded version.

The rules are based on paper version with a section for "rules as coded" that covers the difference from the board game.

There are a few different sources that have the rules (rules for the paper game) as a PDF for download. Just search for World in Flames Rules PDF.

However, I am not sure that will give you the proper appreciation for the rules. They are long, but organized. It is more of an experience than just a reading exercise.

I think quite a few people who bought the MWIF game played the paper game and it plays similar to that.

The PC is great and will give many hours of entertainment just learning the rules. There are very good video tutorials as well as instructional tutorials. For multi player games there has been issues with netplay however PBEM is quite good and you can use social media like Facebook to get quick answers and post screenshots.

I would say it is 90+ % finished (with the exception of AI). Some people will say 97%, some other 91%, and that few % unfinished can be relatively important depending on the player (like not implemented opcional rules). Although NetPlay is in the final steps of debugging, some players (like myself) have been playing by PBEM or TeamViewer for a while.

Anyway, there's lots of threads in this forum regarding this subject, and forum members often have warm discussions about it. You can take a look at other threads regarding this.

If you are prepared to put in some hours to take on this "beast", you are at the right place.

The learning curve is quite high, but once you have seen how the game mechanisms are working and the interaction between naval, air and land assets is done in this game, you are probably addicted to this one. I was, after my first World In Flames game on the board...[:D]

Actually, just checking the sections of the manual, video tutorials and learn the rules needed for a Barbarossa is far easier, and you can start rock n' rolling for a few games. Then slowly, add more rules needed (naval, US entry...) and optional rules... That made the learning curve easier for me. [:)]

I'm relieved to read that the game is 90+% finished, even within the multiplayer aspect, after having read many of the - pretty tough and harsh - initial post replies to the main official thread...

I'm a new but heavily hooked and involved player in War in the Pacific, AE...

Is is it worth buying for purely solo play? How many scenarios are playable?

I can live with just solo as I never play against another person in any of the wargames I play. I learned War In The West by playing against myself.

Would you recommend picking it up for solo only?

There is no AI, so playing solo means you play bothsides yourself. Playing against yourself isn't as good as playing against another player, but it can be very satisfying too, especially when learning the interface and the game itself.

All scenario's are available, except for the two half-map scenarios, since the additional rules for those haven't been coded yet.

I think the game is fine for solo or one on one. I have played solo games, hot-seat (one-on-one) with TeamViewer and Netplay (one-on-one).

It is fine for these. Almost all of the scenarios are just fine for all modes. Fascist Tide and Day of Infamy are the only scenarios that are not yet available, but I understand that they might be available in a test version. There are also several optional rules that are not yet available, but most are.

The outstanding gap is for more than 2 players. Most are addressing this with a shared TeamViewer game. I am going to also give this a try with a Netplay and TeamViewer with each team sharing one session with TeamViewer.

From a multiplayer perspective, it can certainly be improved upon, but I think it is quite playable with multiple players.

I think solitaire is okay since you go through the entire turn before dealing with the other side. Unfortunately, it also means that you capitalize on your own mistakes which you recall after you finish your turn.

I prefer to play with others as they might miss my mistakes and I may get another change to fix that on my next turn.

I'm playing a 4 players PBEM at the moment. The benefit is that when there is an action involving only two players (like naval combat) the rest of us can keep going with our lives until it's our turn to play. That reduces the amount of email you have to take care of (compared to two players)

Playing solo intrigues me. Back in the '70's, when I started with boardgames, I had to play everything solo because I couldn't find anyone else to play against. I still remember those days fondly...

There is so little in the game that is guaranteed - whether it be units one picks or combat table or weather or initiative or turn length etc etc etc.

Solo play can be rewarding.

Yes, players who say the Fog of War isn't present in this game, are seriously mistaken. It's in the die rolls and the weather/turn ending mechanism...

Big value for money playing solo even without AI considering the time you will invest both learning the game and then playing even a few scenarios. The entire war can take months to play, and you will become addicted forgetting to wash, eat, and talk to other humans, ha. Awesome game.
