Indian Ocean Brawl (The War that Never Was) 1989

Following 3 different play sessions from save games on my 3rd attempt, I finally finished this scenario, so i can report on its general course and outcome.
NOTE: All of the following takes place over about 1 day 7 hours in game time, i didn't keep good track of exact times.
The very first thing i did was fire off a couple harpoons at the AGI shadowing the Nimitz Group, killed it.
Next, i fired all the Tomahawks in the SAG at the Aden airbase as well as a couple at the Radar and SAM sites in eastern Yemen from an SSN. Results were not as good as i had hoped. Only SAMs and Radars as well as 2 Il-38 Mays destroyed on the ground.
Around this time, i launched four B-52s from Diego Garcia, armed with AGM-86s, 16 for Aden, 16 for Socotra. Those missiles ultimately destroyed 16 Flankers and 2 Fencers on the ground at Socotra, as well as 2 Bears and 2 Badgers on the ground at Aden. Not as good as another attempt when they destroyed 23 Flankers on the ground at Socotra.
Meanwhile, the SAG is blasting many Fencers, Forgers, and Bears that enter its SAM umbrella.
Simultaneously, my Northern CAP starts intercepting Backfires being launched from the USSR. The Tomcats shot down six of them. Those that managed to launch their missiles....all of those missiles were shot down before reaching any ships.
It is some time after the Backfires are defeated that one of my Orions out of Diego Garcia detects the Soviet Convoy mentioned in the briefing, southwest of India. I already have 3 orions in the area, but stretching their fuel range, so i order them into the attack with harpoons, which manage to destroy two of the three Krivaks escorting the convoy, crippling a 3rd, and setting one of the soviet merchants on fire. They manage to make it back, and i keep sending Orions back which finish off the crippled Krivak and sink most of the merchants. I decide to stop efforts against the convoy for now.
Also the Oil convoys are under attack from Soviet bombers operation over Iran. I lose 2 tankers and 2 Perrys to them. As i stupidly couldn't enter Iranian Airspace to intercept the bombers, i basically left those convoys to their fate.
At this point, i sent the SAG into the Gulf of Aden. My intention is to try to get a general location on the Kiev CVBG, and cause them to use up some of their missiles before my Intruders come in with the main strike.
While the SAG is doing that, i ready a SEAD raid from the Nimitz on Socotra, intending to knock out the SAMs and remaining Flankers so that i can flatten the base with B-52s out of Diego Garcia. I launch four HARM equipped F-18s escorted by six Sparrow armed F-18s. I also launch 4 B-52s to attack Socotra after the SAMs are knocked out and Flankers ether destroyed or refueling.
The SEAD Raid is a disaster, with the SAMs not emitting until my planes are right over them, and i lose the HARM F-18s with only one SAM site knocked out. I saved all the escorts though and they downed 3 Flankers.
However, i completely screwed up and did not recall the B-52s. They were all shot down over Socotra without releasing their bombs. That was a complete failure on my part.
All this time a number of submarines are detected by aircraft, frigates, and subs, and i sink all of them, they are listed in the Losses/Expenditures below.
Now, over 20 hours into the War, i finally get a first contact on the Kiev Group in the Gulf of Aden. I intend to get my SAG into AShM Range to launch every missile they got at the Kiev. This is not intended to Sink the Kiev, it is intended to force them to chew up SAMs and Chaff before my main strike.
TASMs and Harpoons start flying once the SAG is in range, and as expected, they do not kill the Kiev, but do actually sink a Sovremmeny Destroyer. Many SAMs were used. The SAG is unhurt, but out of AShMs and low on SAMs. As it is getting dark, i have the SAG keep a reasonable distance from the Kiev group, to try and maintain contact to help coordinate the main strike, using their helos.
Now i prepare the main strike. I launch all of my A-6s (24x; armed with Harpoons, Walleyes and Skippers), supported by a pair of Prowlers, and escorted by six F-14s. I knew the Kiev Air Wing and the Flanker regiment had already taken heavy losses, so i was confident this would be enough of an escort. Finally, i have tankers waiting south of Oman.
In my second stupid failure, i had forgotten to designate the F-14s as escorts, so they didn't launch until the A-6s were already half way to the target.
The Harpoon armed A-6s arrive First, and are intercepted by Kiev's last two Yak-38s. 2 Intruders and a Prowler are shot down. However, the Prowlers do thier job, and the Missiles make it almost all the way before countermeaures start happening. The Slava CG is pummeled and destroyed, and the Kiev probably took at least one hit. The 2nd prowler is then lost to the Yaks.
Then a pair of Intruders make a run on the Kiev with SKippers, but are shot down before release.
Finally, the Walleye armed Intruders arrive, take fire and lose one, but release their ordinance, all slamming right into Kiev and the Kresta II next to it. Both ships go down very quickly.
The surviving aircraft all reach Nimitz.
I still have rough contact with the remaining Soviet Warships, a Sovremeny and two Udaloy Is. I try to move my SAG away, but they are attacked by them and wiped out, since almost all thier SAMs had been fired. In retaliation, I have one of my nearby SSNs fire its 4 harpoons at the Sovremeny, and to my surprise, they reach the target with no issue and blow that destroyer apart for a quick kill. ASW planes also sink my two SSNs in the area.
Now, with no threat from Kiev and confident that most if not all of the Soctora planes are destroyed, i decide to finally finish off that damned island, and launch every Tomahawk in range at the enemy installations, finishing off the parked Fencers and basically destroying the island as an effective base. The runway is still intact, but all thats left are a few ASW planes.
I decide to finish off that convoy from earlier. I launch a Hawkeye to locate it, and do so with little difficulty. I launch six F-18s armed with Mavericks to finish it off. Whats left of the Convoy is two Grishas and one container ship. The F-18s sink both Grishas and heavily damage the container ship. I decide that the convoy is basically dead and leave it to its fate.
Now, all that is left is to finish off those two Udaloys. My Intruders are ready for another attack, and after a Hawkeye finds the two ships, i launch one last attack. 11x Harpoon armed A-6s, and 6x Walleye armed A-6s. No escort, as the fact that my hawkeye got close with no intercepts meant that there were no fighters left, only helos and ASW planes.
The A-6s make thier attack run, no losses, one Udaloy is sunk, the other takes a hit, but unclear as to how bad. I try to get my A-6s with Walleyes to attack, but they need fuel, and my tankers were not enough. Then apparently the hit was bad as the last Udaloy drops off my scopes.
My Final Score was -37 for my losses. I call it a victory personally.
