AI and target selection

A couple example of weird target selection by the AI.

CG001 - Psel River Bridgehead

Russian Fire Segment

The SU-152 has two Tigers (on the hunt [:D] for its kind - see the two wrecks nearby) three hexes away. There are no hindrance hexes, the Tigers are large targets and a 152mm AP has a fair chance to kill the big cat.

The AI, however, decides to fire at a Pz Kpfw IIIL 14 hexes away, through several hindrance hexes.

Of course, the SU-152 missed the Pz Kpfw IIIL and was destroyed by the Tigers in the subsequent German Defensive Fire (I didn't even bother to fire with the Pz III).

CG002 - Prokhorovka

I placed some Russian tanks in the depression, waiting for the right time to attack the German Panzers in the bottom of the image when they advance to the VPs.

A first Pz IV H appeared, fired on the T-70s, missed and was killed (with some luck) by a T-70 with a side hull hit.

The second Pz IV H in the upper left corner appeared in a subsequent reinforcement segment and it also fired on the T-70s, killing two of them, even though there are 3 T-34 and a KV-1s, which have a much greater chance to kill the Pz IV.

The third and fourth Pz IV appearing (one per turn, always in the same hex) targeted the KV-1s and a T-34. They managed to kill the KV, but both of them were destroyed.

I am wondering if the AI evaluates the threat posed by its possible targets. I took screenshots of these two occurrences, but I have often saw the AI firing at harmless units when more dangerous targets were available... [&:][&:][&:]

This is a good question for the Developer. It may not just be what is the biggest threat. It could be what is the greatest threat I can kill. Also possible that LOS/spotting issue is also contributing to the situation.

Yes this is a combination of all those things. The AI does not think as a human but rather makes calculations. I know Peter will do tweaks to make the AI better and better so your thoughts are always welcome.
