The game lists the commander of the 9th (Separate or Independent) Army, assigned to the Odessa Military District, as Iosif Khorun but the closest I can get to this officer commanding the 9th Army is as Deputy, so technically on the 22nd June he may have been in command.

Most sources list the commander as Yakov Cherevichenko, taking up his appointment on the 22nd June or late June.

This causes a problem as in the game Yakov Cherevichenko is listed as the commander of the Southern Front, a role he did not assume until later in the year. Further more most OOBs do not list the Southern Front as being in existence on 22nd June 1941, as it wasn't created until the 25th of June (from the HQ of the Moscow Military District commanded by Ivan Tyulenev). What was in existence was the Odessa Military District, which is not in the game, commanded by guess who, Yakov Cherevichenko.

So what I think happened is that Yakov Cherevichenko assumed command of the 9th Army on the outbreak of the war and the Southern front was formed from the HQ of the Moscow Military District with its first commander being Ivan Tyulenev.

So the 9th should be commanded by Cherevichenko, Southern Front by Tyulenev and I am not sure who should be in command in Moscow MD. Probably Pavel Artemyev (NKVD).

Thanks for that. I knew I had seen it somewhere. Been awhile since i have played turn 1 as the AXIS.

Note; One source lists Yakov Cherevichenko as being commander of the 9th Army and OMD at the same time; a number of sources give a date of the 10th of September 1941 as the date the OMD was finally dissolved (as it was overrun by the AXIS and therefore redundant).

The game cannot reflect what happens in history. So, the starting date (21.06) oob and leader allocation is more or less correct. Because technically, in the game, a commander cannot command 2 HQ´s Iosif Khorun was chosen for the 9th Army. If you set Tyulenev as commander of the Odessa Military District it would be wrong. He simply was not the commander. So as a result: Every way you chose would not be correct and would be result in complains by others [:)].

After that 21.06.1941 it is too complicated to model all changes. St had to be simplified so the game engine can handle it. The OMD was not renamed to the Southern Front ...


The Southern Front was created with the order No. 20466 on 24.06 with Tyulenev as commander. One day later the Southern Front consists: 9th, 18th Army and 7th and 9th Rifle Corps. (In game these Corps must change their HQ which would be expensive (from OMD -> Southern Front)).

Cherevichenko took over command of the 9th Army and the Odessa Military District was commanded by Chibisov. The Odessa Military District consist of the of the 14th Rifle Corps and other small units. This corps was before under command of the 9th Army (in game you have also to pay ad for this action). Odessa Military District was under control of the Southern Front. (In game this is not possible).

On 06. 07 Southern Front ordered the Odessa Military District to create a Odessa Group for defense. This was practically the 14th Rifle Corps + 116th Rifle Divisions. 16.07.1941 the Southern Front proposes to convert the Odessa group into an army, using the HQ of 14 Rifle Corps and HQ of the OMD. This is also not possible in game....

So therefore, the developers chosen the 21.06 as reference. And not what happens 1-4 weeks after.

Firstly, thanks for the information on the OMD as many of the histories are silent on this subject.

Also I understand the limitations of any game engine and the compromises that have to be made, especially with a weekly turn by turn game. However where possible, I have an expectation that the game is historically accurate as practical, especially in terms of reference data, otherwise it is just alternative history.

If you use 21st June as the starting point then I agree that Tyulenev as commander of the Odessa Military District is wrong, just like Khorun as 9th Army Commander is wrong and Cherevichenko as commander of the Southern Front is wrong.

Anyway the purpose of my postings is to eventually have a more accurate Russian OOB. It is a labor of love.
