Uncle Mark's Tutorial 1 Nato Surface Group v Soviet Forces 1985

Mass confusion here. My helos refused to use active sonar. During a contact with a Victor III submarine, I kept trying to turn it on, but they ignored me. My ships stubbornly refused to open fire, despite constant adjustments of the EMCON settings. In the end, the Russians simply closed to point blank range and destroyed me with gunfire without a single round being fired in return. Has political correctness been programmed into the game? Do Russians now count as friendly forces, and are you only allowed to engage the Americans? "Hey Mr Tambourine Man play a song for me, I'm not sleepy and there ain't no place I'm going to." Help needed!

This is really not the place to ask help, AARs are for sharing how a scenario played out in the sense of sharing experiences that you understood what happened.
As this tutorial started as a community scenario but was added into the base game, im not sure if this would go in Tech Support or not.
You should ask in the general CMANO forum area.
Regarding your problem, i think you will need to provide more information, i refuse to believe your forces would not open fire under direct attack at "point blank" range.
And why would you 'engage' the Americans? Your ships are NATO nations (Allied to US) and the only US unit in the scenario is a submarine under your command.

Hey Pongo,
Welcome. The game can be a bit tricky to get used to but we're here to help. Post in the War Room or the main forum and include a save file and I'm sure you'll get the help you neeed.

Many thanks guys. Apologies, Half Life Expert, I was being facetious. I will take your advice and post on another forum. Learning this game can be a bit of a struggle. Right now, I am starting to think that I will have to micro-manage everything... particularly when sub-hunting.[&:]

EUREKA!
I found out what I was doing wrong, by trial and error, with the result that I achieved the mission without taking any losses. Can anyone advise as to the best SOP for determining if an unidentified contact is hostile or not? If weapons are tight it can get very exciting very quickly when one of these starts shooting at you. Sometimes the consequences are fatal. Any/all advice gratefully received.
Pongo.

Exiting indeed!
Your best policy in the case that you have an unidentified goblin - is to avoid, unless the situation is such that you can shoot first and ask questions later.
Engaging before properly identifying can either turn up a dead whale (and many scenario authors will take points away for doing this), killing a friend, or starting World War three - your choice [:D]
So to identify a sub, try active sonar above and below the layer, its not always possible depending on the sub and the conditions but that gives a good chance. If the sub spooks and starts to run you have a good chance of getting a good ID on it as well.
Very tricky business.

best case is to employ a sensor platform that cannot be killed by the enemy you are interrogating. generally if we're talking about subs, use a MAD/sonobuoy equipped maritime A/C or an ASW helicopter to interrogate subs. if we are talking aircraft, use an AEW aircraft or ground station; if a ground unit, well, you might have more trouble with those.

it depends. i do occasionally roll weapons free when hunting subs, as long as
1. there are no friendly/neutral subs in the area
2. i am not afraid of greenpeace
