Returning to the wargaming fray after 10+ years away.... to get started, looking for some suggestions on the best WW2 PBEM game out there. No matter the scale, but enjoyed playing by email back in the day. Did a search on this section already but didn't bring up anything recent. Look forward to any and all suggestions.

If you were a fan of the old Panzer General series then you have to check out the new version, Panzer Corps. The whole game was redone and improved. Tons of scenarios and campaigns.

Forgot Command Modern Air Naval Operations or CMANO

my vote goes to Decisive Campaigns: Barbarossa too. engaging and tricky!

If you liked PBEM you'll be happy to discover that many of the turn based games from Matrix have that functionality integrated into the game these days. You can find a match, play your turn, and it's automatically sent to your opponent, all within the game itself. Then when it's your turn you just open up the game again and it will be there waiting for you. No need for actually emailing files back and forth.

One that hasn't been mentioned is Order of Battle. Kind of like Panzer Corps but more tactical feeling. It has an extensive free version that you can try out.

Ranger33 - You mention Steam... I have biugth some games there. Can a person with a Steam version play a non seam version player? Also, any advantages/disadvantages to playing within the Steam platform?

I am much taken with the GD1938 variant which has many opportunities for PBEM play. Take a look at the AARs.

Gary Grigsby's War in the West and War in the East use a dedicated server for "PBEM" in which you log on to the server and make your turn which is more secure than the old way of sending game files back and forth.

Both games still have a pretty dedicated following. I'd suggest taking a look at youtube "Let's Plays" of all the titles mentioned and that will give you an idea of what they are like. Youtube has become a huge part of War Gaming and Gaming in general. Also, although I have not delved into it even though I own it, fans of War in the Pacific- Admiral's Edition rave about its detail. And you can play by PBEM with it as well. It takes a long time to play though!

If I were you, I'd wait until 6/6/2017 to make my decision unless you have to make it now. I'm pretty sure there will be a sale on that day of at least any title that deals with Normandy.

Also, Gary Grigsby's War in the East has a sequel coming out at some point called War in the East II. They are working on it now, but is still early in development, I believe.
