Slow performance?

Anyone else having pretty low performance in this game? 30 Years' War runs pretty well on my machine, and I figured this would as well considering it's a smaller scale game.

Turn processing seems quick, but something weird seems to be going on with the graphics drawing.

I'm on a Surface Pro 4, so it might be the High DPI of the resolution, or the processor (I have the i7 model, so it might not be that).

(edit)Attached DXDIAG for reference if you want(/edit)

now for the things to try part

go into power settings and turn off power save mode and run off mains and see if that helps

Image

turn off screensaver as well, which will free up some performance and hopefully make it run better for you, then try and run a clean startup as well, for this i use ccleaner and disable as many startup process i can, some you can't disable and shouldn't anyway, but most can be, which again makes windows run quicker

the less you have running on auto the better

Image

as you can see, i run steam on auto and a sound driver app and my AV and that's it.

stopping anything else doesn't stop it from working, just running each and every load, it kind of like only running apps and programs when you double click on them to get them to load, may take a second longer to load them, but why have 2 odd apps running in the background each and every boot?

while yours will be different, you get hopefully the picture and can do some and then reboot and see what it does anyway, and put back or take out at will, it doesn't or won't break anything, just speeds up windows[8D]

last one, as your on windows 10 as well, another tip

Image

go down the list, the one shown on the left and in every single one, do as shown, and turn off, again windows will still work fine, if you need a given app, the don't turn it off, but most around 90% work fine when off, unless you need a camera and mic etc, then leave on, it's common sense stuff tbh, but can save you loads of resources[8D]

I generally keep a pretty tight leash on the programs that are running on my PC, but thanks for the advice. I keep performance throttling down to a minimum and have pretty much all the garbage disabled. I know the GPU in this thing isn't great and figure there's a lot of bottlenecking there. The only reason I thought to ask is because 30 Years' War performs quite a bit smoother (I'm not one of those 60fps or die nerds, and know that, since this is turn based, super performance isn't really all that important) and was just wondering if there was something I could do to get it to match performance.

I ran it in administrator mode and it seemed to make scrolling a tad smoother, though it might just be placebo effect. Maybe I'll try reinstalling it outside of /program files to see if that helps.

install as admin ( right click install / run) and run as admin normally sets up the permission better i've found

There is definitely something wrong with map scrolling. Very sluggish even powerful machine that has never been sluggish with other games.

if they can find a common fault, with enough machines then they maybe able to narrow it down to a given factor?

hardware, software, drivers etc

altering settings to suit a given system also may help some with less powerful pc's

Do that. And if you don't feel any difference, report back.
We can try with a DirectX wrapper.

I don't have any FPS tools installed, but it seemed to make a tiny tiny difference. Still lots of scroll lagging and tooltip lagging. I know my hardware isn't the best (the GPU primarily), but the scroll lag seems a bit worse than other games using the AGE2.0 engine (I know there's differences between each game and all). 30 Years' War was the best performing one and I saw basically no scroll lag or tooltip lag.

One thing I'm noticing is that it seems to use a lot of my CPU while at idle. Will try to reproduce and grab a pic.

Edit 2. It seems like it doesn't interact well with the antimalware embedded in windows. It seemed to be taking a lot of cycles up in my CPU. Disabled it and the game scrolls smoothly and runs quick.

That's Windows Defender. Lately, I've been having issues too (not related with games) with Windows Defender in one of my systems.
Do you have any other anti-virus installed?

Nope. Just defender. After I disabled it, the game runs fine. I wonder if it has something to do with the latest "creator's" update.

The above solution,to add an exception for ecw.exe in Windows Defender, worked for me too. Now the game map is scrolling fine.

Thanks!

got debug mode on and now it's 25fps on average, so once turned back off it's higher still, so altering the file to 100 seems to have done the trick for me also

Editing General.opt from 10 to 100 seems to have worked for me. Thanks!
