Is there a fixed number of private sector ships per x amount of mining stations?

As far as I can tell, it's all based on demand and how many freighters your private sector can afford to construct.

No. As remoteleg has said. The private sector builds what it needs based on demand....GP

This is why I sometimes play pirate-play and build 100 small freighters just to see how the AI handles them.. It's quite hilarious and fun.

I also try games with only 100's of mining ships to experiment.

I'm surprised you don't go bankrupt. When I play a pirate (rarely) I always struggle to maintain positive cashflow even with a small fleet.

As an empire, my private sector usually builds about 200-300 freighters by the 20 year mark. That's playing on a small 4x4 map and not building a lot of mining stations. I imagine for people that play on larger maps with longer games the number of freighters can easily exceed 1000.

I think I had a good situation where I put starbases mining on some extreme rare luxury resource and I kept selling that to empires or maybe I had done research trading to get the money..

not exactly in my own experience , but there seems to be a similar sort of a direct relationship between the number and type of Space Ports built (Small, Medium, Large) and the number of freighters built by the private sector.
