Protecting Japanese convoys

How best to protect the Japanese convoys?

The allies in my games build every single sub they can. They only scrap ones that have a move of 3 or less. This leads to lots of CW and US subs constantly raiding.

What can Japan do?

I've heard advice, "Take Calcutta" but that's not so easy to do.

How can the Japanese protect their convoys? What kind of resources do you commit to escorts and how?

The tactics are the same as the ones the CW has to use. React into the zero with LBA so the subs need 4 surprise. Have naval units in the zero, one and four boxes so you always have ASW and so you can find the subs and have a surface or naval air against them. The Japanese need to build lots of aircraft, especially their long range NAVs.

One thing possibly different. The Japanese do not have the CP reserves that the CW has. Many players will try to build a CP a turn early on.
