Sorry if this reveals my noobie-ness. How do we learn about opfor equipment? I can easily determine from the counters if an enemy unit is armoured or infantry, etc. But how can I tell what kinds of tanks the enemy has? Would be nice to know if I'm staring down Pz IV's or PzVs, for example.

left click on the unit counter to highlight it; the key will show the equipment including on-hand/authorized in that unit.

He was asking about enemy units.

I think you have to find out the hard way: Launch an attack. The Loss Report will detail what the target consisted of.

That doesn`t work on enemy units. Only way to know is on the battle reports after a combat.
