By inspecting the model files (PNG), I see up to 6 possible improvements/advances. There are six sprites modeling weapons, tanks and infantry. However, in D-day scenario for example, I only see a maximum level of research improvement 5. Is there a correspondence between the maximum research improvement and the number of sprites (6)? is the maximum research progress only 5 and not 6? then, the sprite number 6 when will appear? thanks!

That's because tech level 0 use the first sprite.[;)]
So sprite 6 is for tech level 5.
