Naval patrol mode missing

It would be great if Bombers and Naval Bombers could be put in Naval Patrol mode. They wold attack any enemy ship that comes into the line of sight and would stop the mis-use of naval assets to be used for spying out coast lines without risking an airstrike. It would also realistically make enemy navies more careful when approaching a coast line with enemy airbases.
Any opinions? I think that would be a great feature.

I agree, but I can't noodle thru all of the possibilities, would need a beta to playtest. I daydream that it would be similar to the way Air/Ground is implemented now - Mission-Intercept-CounterIntercept - only the mission would be Naval Interdiction, or something [;)]

It would need to be
NavalIntercept
Potential intercept of bombers by enemy interceptors
Potential escort of bombers

I can already see this abused by tossing ships into the Frey to weaken the attacking bombers (exposing position) before striking with your own air fleet (think English channel) for total destruction. The simplersolution may be to reduce Naval units (except landing craft) Land spotting to 0 if you are worried about this.

It is not the spotting only - I want fleets to be scared of land based aircrafts. The Royal Navy did not come close to Sicily when hundreds of aircraft were stationed there...

This (being scared of land based aircraft) still happens to a certain extent within the mechanics of the game play that can have ships spotted for attack by 'within range' enemy air assets during the attacker's turn.
What do you think?

I have to agree with Christolos. As the game mechanics work now, it's pretty much suicidal for the Royal Navy to hang around Sicily, for instance, when they have no air cover. Yes, you can sneak a ship up to the coast for a peek and then dart away, but if you try to bombard, you will lose AP's and supply and risk not being able to get out of range of the Axis riposte the next turn. I'm not sure I'd want to foreclose a nice cat-and-mouse aspect of the game with the kind of auto-intercept of naval units by air that's being proposed. Naval units are already extremely vulnerable to air (at least until you can boost their AA values). I don't think I'd want to make them even weaker.
