how to help the programmed opponent

In some scenario notes I've seen the designer suggest that the player occasionally help the programmed opponent, for instance by making sure objectives are valid, or making sure the PO's army is not getting unorganized.

While playing the game solo, how does one go about checking up on the PO? Go into the editor every once in a while with a saved game turn? Or somehow change sides for a turn?

that really sums it up - you check the PO path(s) in the editor and also remember the new feature of the .AI file. There's a thread by Ralph somewhere here in the forum. There's also a document called Evil Ed; which was basically written fro TOAW III, but it is still valid how to consider and use the PO/AI related stuff.

Feel free to use and toy around with any of the tutorials; though '41 and '43 - Combat would be the best ones, because of the enemy units present.

Or somehow change sides for a turn?
From the 'Play' Dropdown Menu, click 'Computer Player' and you can switch sides.

Appreciate the link, Herr Oberst. Anymore "hidden treasure" design related documents out there?

Thanks!
