Okay so I reinstalled to get back into it. Loaded all the updates and booted up Grand Campaign - only problem is there seems to be no light ships.

Also I read someplace where’s there is a historical setup for troops at the start of the game stored someplace - if that is true - where?

There are two different Grand Campaign scenarios. The Classic EIA scenario does not have light ships or transports. The Alternate EIH scenario has light ships (and piracy) and transports, plus other force pool differences. Section 5.3 in the updated User Manual in the \Data\docs folder has more details. There's a long story about the different versions, and I made them separate scenarios in an attempt to appease some die-hard players. Frankly I haven't seen many of them return to the game one way or another but it's there.

There are no official historical setups but some setups are closer than others. Considering the game starts in January 1805 and Napoleon's Ulm-Austerlitz campaign in Austria didn't start until September, players don't usually wait that long before getting aggressive. So not sure how useful any historically accurate setup for January would significantly change game play. Other than grabbing some adjacent minors during the first couple of turns, the winter supply costs restrict a lot of activity so things don't usually heat up until spring. If you haven't checked yet, please review the player notes and strategy articles at the back of the User Manual. Enjoy!
