Air Unit Assignments

HQ Assignments for Air Units - Early on I tried playing a game by using the Manual setting for all HQ's, and while it added a little fun to the Historical OOB aspect, ultimately I found it to be tedious and unnecessary. The computer does a fine job when attaching units to HQ's. However, since the Air Unit/HQ Rule was added, I've found it to be consistently a pain in the butt. So I tried playing another full game of manually assigning units to HQ's, but got real bored with it. So now I am playing another full game of letting the computer assign units, and while it does the standard good job with ground units, I find that it quite often blows it when Air Units are involved, and not just a few times in this game, but as I said consistently since the Air Unit/HQ Rule was added. Below is a shot that shows a few German units and two HQ's, and the computer misses the proper attachments [both Air Units are mis-attached].

Here we can see the computer has attached all of the German units to the highlighted HQ. It is at 5/8 and sitting on a 5 resource.

Here we can see the computer has attached none of the German units to this highlighted HQ. It is at 5/8 as it is linked to the other HQ, while sitting on a 4 resource.

I imagine it is a lot less effort for me to manually attach these units than it is to adjust the HQ Attach behavior, but because it is a
constant I thought I would mention it.

I am playing another game and tinkering around with it and trying to figure out why it is doing this. If you hadn't guessed this yet, I would guess that it is attaching most units to the HQ with the higher experience rating to get that benefit. It makes sense and there is probably a fine line between that benefit and the better supply benefit.

The air/HQ attachment for supply maximization is a bit tedious. I'm going to suggest that air units should attach themselves to the highest supply providing HQ automatically when using the "auto assist" mode(or any mode) and have first priority.

This means that when operating an air unit to the proximity of a new HQ, it automatically attaches negating the lowest readiness unit's previous attachment. Later the player can reassign attachments if necessary.

James suggestion is a good one. However, we players have to recognize that Hubert's time is limited and we may never see this enhancement (at least to some.) What would be helpful is to understand how the AI determines attachments in the Auto and Auto assists modes.

The AI always determines by distance, from nearest to farest. If you want to attach an additional aircraft, place it directly near the HQ (in auto-assist-mode), and deattach one of those units farer away, preferable one that could be attached to another HQ. This way the aircraft will be attached automatically; if not in the enemy`s turn, then in your next.
