Rico's Desperate Measures

Hey Rico, tough scenario but I had a lot of fun!![:D]

I played as the Germans on very difficult against the Russian A/I. I lost big time, a major loss at that![:(]

I managed to get the two 50 point victory objectives but the three 100 point objectives eluded me. I killed
all the Russian tanks without loosing a single Panther but per the victory conditions the Germans do not get any
points for enemy kills.

Good scenario, tough for the Germans. Thank you!

I played this scenario on CMBB, I loved it and never forgot, 15 years later I adapted it on TOTH.
You raise a question that haunts me for a long time and that will haunt me, I think, for a long time:[:D]
What makes one scenario more interesting than another?

That is a good question Rico!

I believe that a lot of things go into making one scenario more interesting than another for TotH like:

Terrain (lay of the land)
Force Mix (squads, ordnance, vehicles support weapons, etc.)
Victory Conditions (Can victory be achieved?)
Map Objective placement (Is the placement of objectives reasonable)
Time (Is the number of turns right and can the objectives be taken in the turns allotted?)
Intangibles (What will the A/I do? If I do this with my forces what will happen? How will the A/I react to my moves?)
Finally, the most important for me, Excitement! (Until I begin to play it for a few turns I may not see or feel
excited about it. Only time will tell. But if all of the above things are present then it should be exciting to a degree IMO)

Scenario design is not an easy thing. There is a lot to consider when making scenarios. Bringing all of that together
will determine one scenario being more interesting than another I believe.

The two systems are different, CMBB use WEGO and TOTH IGOUGO.
In CMBB, the win strategy is the fire.You stay German infantry and tanks to the edge of woods and you eliminate every Russian unit discovered by recon in village.
Then it's clear you progress to take objectives.
In TOTH, the win strategy is the move. You progress quickly in village with German infantry under cover of tanks to engage in close combat Russian infantry to take objectives, then you stop counter-attack.

I missed this scenario! [X(]

Since Big Ivan already played it with the Germans, I gave it a try taking the Russians. It's tough, but not exceedingly so (perhaps I have also been lucky: the Panthers scored very few hits on the T-34s).

Six German AFVs (Panthers) killed:
one in CC (the Russian preferred method to deal with AFVs)
one by a SU-100 (a front hull hit at 8 hexes: nice gun [:D])
two by T-34/85's (side hits)
one by a 76mm AT (front hits, probably a critical hit)
one by a 45mm AT (the n-th hit, after having twice immobilised it and while it was engaged in CC[:D]

Five Russian AFVs (four T-34/85, 1 SU-100) killed
a SU-100 and a T-34 by OBA
two T-34s by PSK
one T-34 by Panther.

P.S. The AI does not react when its AFVs take fire from the flank or rear (this is what allowed me to kill a Panther with a 45mm ATG). Could this be corrected so that, if it takes fire on the weaker sides, it changes its VCA to show the most armoured aspect to the enemy fire?

P.S. #2 I am not sure, but I think I saw a T-34 gain acquisition after it fired in motion [&:]. I will make some tests to be certain I had not a hallucination.

Hell I never even saw those in my play through. They must have been hanging out in the back beyond my LOS.

I destroyed all the T-34/85's but the SU-100's never showed their smiling faces....WOW!

Interesting, this game never ceases to amaze me!

SU-100s are not as sleek or deadly as a Jagdpanther, but they do their job nicely [:D].

Their only drawback is their scarce capability against infantry, with no MGs and a very limited supply of HE rounds. On the other hand, that's what ISU-152s are for ;).

Actually, I found playing the Russians much more challenging... even though the MA of two of these supposed Wunderpanzer broke down on the first turn and never recovered, leaving me with two 45-ton beasts armed with two MGs.
