How not to play Soviets in 3 quick turns

Sparkley T (Axis) vs Tyronec (Soviet)
Sudden death campaign.
Standard rules with random weather.

Here is my position at the start of the Soviet turn.

Just too many critical mistakes:

1. I let them across the river above Pskov. Axis may not break out from here and it is tying up two good divisions, but it is taking a lot more Soviets to defend.

2. Should have got higher fortification values here before Axis got into contact.

3. Have made a right mess of my armies around Pskov. Already had 8 armies between Northern and NW front so have used Moscow MD for the 9th. But it should have been in the gap between here and Western Front if at all, so I could have stacked infantry from the different NW armies without too many minuses in combat.

4. This are is probably OK

5. But letting them across the Dnepr around Gomel is not.

6, Major mess up here. After nearly holding Saper in this area, T2, in the previous game I tried to reinforce it and stop Axis creating a pocket. They were all duly pocketed T2 and repocketed again T3. The result was just more units in the bag; 16 in total compared with 12 in the last game.

7. Silly mistake. Had 6 units garrisoning Odessa but only one in the city. 3 panzer divisions came round the back and assaulted across the river, 8 units pocketed.

If the problems were just in one area would not be so bad, could take the losses and retreat. However having messed up badly across the whole front line I think it is not worth continuing.
Credit to S-T who played to take good advantage of every mistake, if he had been less aggressive I could probably have got away with it and not even noticed.

Well done to both of you. I guess a good game and lessons learned.

I think we can safely say SparkleyTits is a big league player.

Even in the short time I have played with ST in the team games I have seen how many games they have played and the vast experience they have accumulated. They have a voracious appetite for learning every part of the game and getting better - and it is showing. I think there is no one who would not find ST competitive now.

I was very surprised with how AGN went turn 2 I had to change my planned allocations across the fronts because of it

Was surprised you left the hole over the swamps I knew armour would be useless for two turns but it was too great a cause of distraction on the buildup you were attempting at Pskov

With the fort W of Pskov I was very surprised you let me take it turn 2 as the hex NW of Pskov is in my opinion the biggest hinge when trying to hold Pskov in it's entirety so needs a level 2 fort before Axis there to plausibly hold indefinitely

Both of those things could of caused a spiral in AGN and possibly allow me to pocket a nice bit if you did not back off and reform your lines, you doubled down the bet at the behest of the other fronts or what I think is the likely option of me dropping the ball and making a mistake

The 3.4k planes you had up there were absolutely terrifying though I gathered a massive north/centre air arm ready for a collosal airwar next turn but I was very anxious on how that would go

Which version have you played?

5. IMO is not a mistake.

Good move of ST at Odessa!

I second that.

I appreciate the kind words guys but this is nothing more than me just getting lucky and cathcing Tyronec on a bad day for a couple of turns

Next game I am entirely sure this will not be happening

Should be proud of yourself Telemecus. All the players that have been under your wing learning have spoken volumes of respect for your torturing to me in private emails :). Thank you and all other forum members that spend their time helping those in this game.

I don't think #1 is that bad. I have done it & always have some horrid supply problems supplying those units.

How in the world did you end up with #6 Tyronec?

For number 1 I think the effect would not of been as heavy if I only pushed in 1 hex as Tyronec could of got up forts on the swamps behind the light woods and bottlenecked me in.
I thought if I took 2 hexes it would stop fort building would be much harder to bottleneck and gives me three hexes to breakthough once the infantry arrived instead of a small bridgehead

The panzers were about to be replaced by infantry next turn they were only being used as stop gaps as swamps and supply is too much of a struggle that way for any quick gains

Ya, that direction is extremely difficult if the Soviets decide to make it that way. But it had its intended effect :)

It was surprising fun, had some nice applications of smoke screens for both sides which I enjoyed the added variation and not half as daunting as I lead myself to believe it would be

Alot of that had to do with muscle memory from the early game I feel so will still need a couple of games to get grips but I think I will be phasing out the bike stabilisers better CV offers when possible from now on

I don't think any of these are necessarily terrible and you can certainly recover. Not good - but not terrible either.

ST has certainly proven in my game (Stalingrad to Berlin) with him to be a very good player.

Is this a real time update of your game? Will you continue updating us?

This was my position end of T1. I thought there was enough there to stop to stop the double encirclement of that mass of units, but I was wrong. Once they were caught once, even though the pocket was very loose, there was no getting out a second time.

I have surrendered. Perhaps the position is recoverable but am doubtful.
