Hi guys, sorry for asking so many questions.

I managed a minor victory in mission 2, (couldn't lauch from one SSN thanks to a DD sitting on top of it.)

In mission 3 I managed to sneak through the screen undetected, (What a rush!)
However I approached the Kiev as it was steaming south at 5 knots, I came up to periscope at 1nm, about 90 degrees off her bow. I was immediately spotted and caught a face full of rockets.

Would it have worked better to wait until she was passed me and to pop up in her stern? I know sonar is blind in the baffles and I was at full stop because I wasn't in the baffles, so I must have been spotted by radar or eyeball. I came up at 0150 local time so it would have been dark.

Any ideas?

I haven't played this one, but I think you want to gather intelligence by listening to the Kiev, which can be done from shallow depth, and not revealing your position. Egress to the rear of the Soviet formation, THEN go to periscope depth.

You would never want to raise that periscope that close. You'll be spotted on radar in seconds.

You were bang on the money.

The brief says you need to get within 1nm for 5 minutes and that you need hull photos, I misread that as needing surface photos, (memories of SH4).
Once I was at shallow and about 0.7nm away I got the message that we were in position and it went smoothly from there.

I recently learned that this mission in Silent Service is based on the one performed by the HMS Swiftsure in which the crew managed to photograph one of the Kiev's propellers.
