SOVIET- AFGHAN WAR: 1st year of war

The Soviet invasion plan was similar to those of the 1956 Hungarian and 1968 Czechoslovakian interventions in which coups were staged in the capitals while mechanized and airborne units seized key cities. Shows of force intimidated potential opposition, and massive firepower crushed armed resistance.

This scenario is what would have happened if the Afghan Government and military were able to resist the Soviet invasion and how long could they last. If the Afghan Military is able to hold long enough for international pressure to maybe cause a Soviet withdrawal.


Abbreviations:

DR of Afghanistan ( Democratic Republic of Afghanistan)
G- Guards
Af- Afghanistan
Sov- Soviet Union

so far, from play testing the Afghan forces hold for 2-3 turns in the south around Kandahar, but do better north of the capital.

2nd Corps Qandahar
3rd Corps Gardez

12x Infantry Divisions with a strength of 8,000 men
Guards Armored Regiment
3x Armored Brigades
2x Cdo Brigades
3x Cdo Divisions
20x Tribal Militia Brigades with 2,000 men each.
