Help please- Can't install the bugger

Hi everyone,

I downloaded that monster of a wargame, Steel Panthers- WAW, all 360 megs of it, only to find out I can't install the bugger. After about five minutes of heavy disk trashing a) either I get a "disk full" message, even though I have about 700 megs free, or b) I finally get to the setup screen, until it asks me for the location of some "Disk A", just like Aces of the Pacific and Doom eons ago. If I select the default location it tells me the temp file is not there (I did a search, actually it's nowhere on my HD) Frustrating, you said?

Before inflicting heavy physical damage on my hapless computer, I tried Pacific War, but alas the setup program is the same, and so are the results.

Now, I really looked forward to trying these out, but I suggest Matrix replace that damn setup utility. Even just a big UHA or zip file would be better than that prehistorical disk system, IMHO.

Sorry if that sounded like a flame, I'm just frustrated.

Please help!

I have a PII-300, 192 RAM setup BTW. Running latest Voodoo3 drivers and DX7.

I doubt its your system , I just loaded it onto my puny 133 Mhz Cyrix 486 ,with 48 Mb Ram with only 460 Mb space , and the thing works ok....but I can't get this 'MECH EXE' to work...would this make a difference as I get the occasion crash?

Hi Ajax..
The "disk A: error" Could mean you did not get the whole file - IF you used a download manager - "Get Right" - try to resume. Otherwise you will have to download again. This happens sometimes...the interenet is still not completely reliable when it comes to huge files like this...

From a distance, its hard to say. I do share your frustration but that is small comfort.

Red Baron could be right. It could be you did not get the entire file.

I loaded and installed both SPWAW and Pac War with no problem. And of course, me saying that just makes it worse Image

Computer Gaming World is coming out in their December issue with a good disk of 4.0 as a part of their mag. You might want to try to get that and use it.

Sorry you are having these problems. That was not our intention.

And your comment was not taken as a flame at all...Wild Bill

If it makes you feel any better, I had the same problem. I found it was best to download the files from the Matrix site rather than elsewhere, as some of them had file size problems...and that's when I'd get the "please insert disk 2" messages.

Keep trying. It *is* worth it! Image

Thanks for the help guys. I have a cable connection and don't use Getright, but I suspect that getting the exact same error in three different files means it's probably not the download. But I'll try getting Pacific War from somewhere else.

Strange, I've been having the "put 2nd disk in drive" error with the 4.1 patch. Everything else installed ok.
