Ship Maneuver stat

Post by thephalanx1453 »

Does this number help the ship evade bombs and torpedoes only? Or does it also work against gunnery attacks?

The game manual doesn't mention this, and the editor manual says that Maneuver only affects the chance of bombs and torpedoes hitting the ship. However, in some posts I've read on this forum it was implied that this stat also affects gunnery attacks against the ship.

I don't think you will get a clear answer since that can only come from developers and those that know the code. It appears more difficult to hit PT's but is it because they are classed as PT's or because they have better mvr, or both? only the code can answer that.

But whether Maneuver affects bombs/torpedoes only or all weapons is basic game information. How can the game be played without basic information? That's like playing chess without knowing how a Rook moves.

Not exactly what is written in the editor manual.

It isn't basic game information.

You are missing the entire point of the AE game system if you focus on this relatively not important element. You have absolutely zero tactical input in land, air and sea combat.

There are several different combat modules which involve vessels. These modules involve multiple inputs, maneouvre being just one of the inputs. What you see on your screen is only a raw input value which is usually modified differently depending on the particular combat module which it is fed into. There are many other inputs which are much more important than the displayed raw maneouvre value. To use your terminology, "basic game information" is provided for those game elements which play a significant role in the game and where your choices and decisions have a material impact.

Actual algorithms will never be publicly disclosed.

Considering that AE was released in mid 2009 and classical WITP about 5.5 years beforehand, and Uncommon Valour predates the two, there has been a sizeable player base which has managed to play this game system quite successfully without this so called "basic information".

It is exactly what is written in the editor manual.
Page 16 "Manoeuvre represents the ship’s ability to avoid bombs and torpedoes, and is related to the size and
speed of the ship; the longer it is, the harder it is for the ship to avoid these attacks; the faster it is, the
easier."

It absolutely is basic game information to know which module(s) a basic editable stat goes into, eg. whether it goes into gunnery hit formula or not. I don't need to know the exact hit formula itself, as you said the algorithms aren't disclosed. However, I need to know, and it shouldn't be too much to ask, whether this stat factors into gunnery attacks at all. That is basic game information. Otherwise, all stat numbers in the game would have no meaning. What is gunnery stat? Who knows? Maybe it's how far your ships can go without running out of fuel, since apparently it's forbidden to know that gunnery stat factors into a ship's gunnery attack against other ships. Same with maneuver. Same with every other number in the game.
