Is retreat direction predictable?

Hi -
Just purchased this game in the Steam sale and having fun playing with German turn 1. Creating those initial breakthrough and deciding how many divisons to attack with (attacking with minimal # of divisions seems to create a huge AP penalty in the target hex so doesn't necessarily lead to breakthroughs) is trickier than I expected! One question I had -- is retreat path for enemy units predictable in some way? I have been trying to open holes for my armor to drive through and have been trying to make sure they are also clear of any ZoC, but sometimes the Soviets retreat the exact way I don't want them to go!
