Nope that occurred to me so I have already tried doing that - it had no effect. I did wonder if it was a fragment of an old problem install that was blocking it so I have removed all traces of the install... still no joy. I therefore now have lost the game completely.
I am on a Mac, installing to my parallels windows - no other problems with other Matrix/Slitherine games.

either a permissions issue or AV like already said, best advice is to install the update from a download folder not a desktop one, and add the file to the safe list of the AV program, other than that, have no idea on Mac issues tbh
the file update exe needs full admin permissions, so right click install or run as admin works on the pc, on a Mac, it's any ones guess im sorry to say

Guess I am fated not to use this.
I have all antivirus turned off, I run the installer as administrator and it goes through to the screen that says setting up uninstall (or something like that) and then the install just fails and the window shuts.
Ok I give up.

Why is the uninstall.exe targeted at all? I thought a patch is to be installed.

Initially I was attempting to install the update. However I discovered the original game was not properly installed. I thus cleared out the whole directory. I am therefore now attempting to do a clean install of the original game and hitting these problems.

Seems to me the installation routine thinks TOAWIV is still there and tries to uninstall it what fails for whatever reasons.
First go to the uninstall programs screen(sorry not sure how that screen is called in English) and see if it still lists the game, if so click it to start the uninstall and see if it works.
If you get the same error check the path in the error window if the uninstall.exe is there at all, if so start it manually and see if the same error comes up again.

Why does Matrix still follow the ancient and redundant practice of placing the uninstaller in C:\Windows?
It's a nasty and outdated practice, files like that do not belong there, they belong in the game directory. And obviously it causes customers to experience issues like this.
Roger: You have bought a product and you are entitled to proper support, open a support case and ask them to fix it:
http://www.matrixgames.com/support/
Their broken installers are Matrix' games sole responsibility.

Well if someone manually toys around with the installation by clearing a directory completely it's not the companies fault that problems show up.
If you expect proper installation, one can expect the customer to properly uninstall too.

Ouch you certainly don't mince words do you?
I had previously uninstalled it using the uninstaller and it had for some reason left some files behind, it was those I removed.
At the end of the day if I cannot use the game I cannot use it, my bad.
Matrix/Slitherine customer for over 10 years, first time I have encountered a problem.
Thanks for your advice.

No uninstall listed...... maybe its some registry issue, not really going to get into that morass.....

Thanks but the issue is not an update any more, its not being able to install the actual game - do your comments still apply? If so will give it a go later.

From that it looks like it tries to create the folder in the Documents\My Games folder, which TOAW4 requires. Apparently the Parallels system (guessing here) mounts that folder as a networked drive in Windows to your Mac home directory.
I also understand now that your are trying to install it in a 'virtual' Windows under Mac - so not really sure if that's even supported, and you might be on your own in terms of support, guess I was a bit harsh on the Matrix support [8D]
Is there a way to tell Parallels to use another, local directory for your Home directory?
You could try overriding it, in "proper" Windows you would right-click Documents in Explorer, Properties, and then change to a *local* folder on the Windows drive. Usually it would be C:\Users\username\Documents, at least in Windows 10.
If your entire HOME directory (i.e. C:\Users\username) is overridden by Parallels that would complicate things... you'd need to consult the Parallels documentation for this.

Yes. It might be something related with Parallels, if indeed you are using it.
Our experience is that Bootcamp is the best way to run Windows games on a Mac, as then you are using a full version of Windows.

Ok guys thanks for your time, life is too short.
I can see why Parallels gets the finger of blame pointed at it. However just to set the record straight on it....
I have at least 7 other active Matrix/Slitherine games installed and running on Parallels on the computer, no issues with them either in running or in installs.
TOAW4 did install fine in the past, it was then uninstalled and now I have the problem. So the fact it ran in the past and I uninstalled it because at that stage I was running short of disk space points conclusively to it not being a Parallels issue. I do understand why assumptions are made it must be.
If I really really want to play the thing I will just stick it on a laptop, but have come to the conclusion that my life can go on without it being materially damaged by not having the ability to play this game. It will be filed along with many other games as not used by me......
In my experience mentioning Parallels to tech support is like giving them a 'get out of jail free card' - it allows the immortal words 'Sorry we don't support Parallels'
