So we had problems with the earlier version - specifically adding engines to the Mod for German and Italian aircraft. This is version 2.1 of Joe's mod. This one works with Tracker too, which makes things easier for me as the axis player. This still feels a little cutting-edge for the mod so wish us luck that we don't run into anything that breaks the game. [&o][&o]

I'm planning to take China as it will give me a fairly safe wall to put my back against. I'm just starting my T1 orders but I was wondering... Is there any advantage going for India VS Australia? My thoughts are advantage India as long as I take China because the allies have to lengthen their supply chain if they plan to fight in that Theatre while my supply chain should be somewhat safer. As far as resources/oil go, I think I have it better if I take India also. Any strong recommendations?



Sumatra
So in this mod the ACEH (Italian Far East [R]) are on the northern tip of Sumatra from Medan up to Sabang.

I've set all of the units from the Italian Far East to accept replacements. Three units from Medan (two divisions and a Tank Bn.) are moving from Medan to Tandjoengbalai to capture that base.

On the road at 44,77 is the 7th ACEH Div. and I have it marching for Sibolga.

The Italians have three subs in the area of the Strait of Malacca so I have them all on patrols. I also formed an ASW TF of three TB that will run an ASW patrol between Medan and Sabang. I have an AG of IMAM 43 FPs at Medan that will fly naval search. I've limited the range to four, which gives me good coverage of the Strait. Most of the pilots are at least in the 50 range for NavS so I'm hoping they'll help out with increasing detection levels for my subs.



Also at Sabang is the Ali Mughayat Syah, a Nino Bixio Class CB. I have no escorts in the area other than possibly those three TB that are on an ASW patrol. I'll leave this CB in port for now until I figure out how to get some escorts for her.



A pair of German subs start out on the board - the U-112 and 113. The XIB Class U boat carries a FP (an Ar. 231). The U-112 starts north of Sumatra but defaults to Rabaul for a home port but that's so far away and through contested waters… I'll keep her near Sumatra until I can gain control of the Strait of Malacca. The U-113 is south of Oz so sending her to Rabaul is no problem.

Burma
At Kompong Trach is my 1st Para Assault Div. along with three AG of Ki-57-I transports. The paratroops will be dropping on Victoria Point.

Since I can't tell the Allied OOB, but would think that if you get more toys of the German/Italian/Axis side, then the Allies would be getting some wash-back from the ETO making any push for Australia or India difficult to pull off.

Regarding supplies: I honestly don't know. Joe added resources for Japan but until I run a few turns through, I really don't have a feel for what the economy can sustain.

Regarding the new toys on the board: It might be a wash when I look at the new toys that Japan receives in comparison to the allies. Later in the war Japan will receive a long range bomber (late 1944?). I see some possibilities with that.

I hear you on Australia, and with German troops already at Rabaul, it looks like an easy push. I think that building up the forts and airfields a bit in the DEI will give me a better defense in depth. And I've made up my mind to drive for India. I guess the final factor is how Joe reacts at the beginning of the war. If he is a Sir-Robin kind of guy then the DEI and Burma should fall quickly.

I would imagine at least Northern Australia as it pushes the allies out of bomber range of the Balikpapan oilfields. Australia, so depends how you Allied player feels. Many send a lot to India in an effort to forestall any quick take over, bth are weak but with the mod changes maybe that has change some as well.

I'll show some pics of the map for both the axis and the allied side tomorrow. I just finished my turn one orders for the axis and I'm pretty much done clicking for the night. [:)]

I did change my strategy for the DEI however. With German troops already at Rabaul and with what looks like an easy push for that section of the board, I'll be driving from the bottom of the DEI and back up through Java and Celebes, Mendano, and the PI while also hitting northern Borneo, northern PI, and driving down from Sumatra and Malaya. Kind of like trying to net all of the allied troops and bases while cutting them off from routing south to Oz and preventing supplies and reinforcements from coming up.

Pearl
At Pearl Harbor I drew first blood. Seven SSX launched, 5 flounder, 1 returns, and a single SSX strikes the first blow.



When the air strike arrived I caught a Training flight over Hawaii. It rained trainnies over PH - or at least parts of their aircraft…

In truth - I'm kind of bummed with the results. PH starts out with about 100 fighters and 70ish bombers… And with 10 Engineer units, 59 runway hits will probably be erased by next turn. I think KB will exit stage left… No day-2 attacks.

Near Japan
Near Chefoo, the SS KXVII taps the AMC Kormonan with a torpedo, doing 10 SYS and 34 Flt. I'm sending the Koroman to Kiejo for repairs.



Guam
I had a series of attacks against Guam, America's main base in the region since it pulled out of the Philippines. I tore up the fighters with sweeps and my escorts as I went after Guam's port and shipping.



Port damage will stop any increases to fort building for the allies. Guam starts with forts at 4, has a CD unit and an assault strength of 363. I'll work to shut down the AF and wear the base down some before performing an actual assault.

In reviewing my Ops Report - there was not much from December 7th - primarily a lot of air groups on ships were modified slightly in size.


Below in the attachment is the combat report with the operational report embedded at the end of the file.

So I was looking at all of the empty bases down here. Germany already has Rabaul and is strongly vested in that area. The allies start with a fairly strong outpost in Guam that I'm taking pains to pound into submission and capture. And at Truck and Babeldaob, Japan starts out with quite a few SNLF plus a para unit.

I'm planning to slice through the Moluccas, and Ceram, scoop up all of the isles and bases north of Oz, and then drive up. That should enable me to cut off support from the allies to that whole region and capture my objectives while knocking out as much enemy shipping as possible.

To that end I'm gathering precious engineer units to help provide air support as well as get build up a few strategically located air fields.

Tenate was the first base to fall as Joe was flying float planes from there. I'll hit Sorong next and that should help reduce his eyes-in-the-sky over that part of the board.

Regarding the game - Joe has the turn now and should be working on his carpal tunnel . I'll be leaving for a conference in Sacramento and to visit my oldest son this weekend. I don't expect to return home til Sunday the 5th of August.

Joe sent a pair of CL to Khota Bharu where I have an Amphibious TF unloading. I have a SCTF in route; Joe's CLs got there first. Still, I came out ahead on points as I took out one of his CL. Losing a DMS was a bummer though.

Up near Medan one of my Italian-made subs gets a xAKL. It looks like Joe is breaking up his ships into single-ship TFs. It's harder to find the smaller TF but I'm good with it. The truth is that was pretty much what all of the merchant shipping was doing at the onset of war - getting the heck out of Dodge anyway they could and as sneaky as they could.

Alrighty. I'm back home and brought home a cold with me. I wanted a puppy but had to settle for a virus... I live in California and man - its a-burnin... At home all through July we've been dealing with a lot of smoke coming from the fires in Yosemite and western CA. We stopped by Chico to see my son and his fiancee (they had evacuated from their place in Redding); we spent a day with them. They are fine and consider themselves lucky. Some of their friends lost homes. Then we went to Sacramento for my convention and it was yucky-smokey all through the week. Then we shot up to Reno and spent a few days up in the Greatest Little City in the World. It was nasty-yucky-smokey there too. And when we returned home? Yup more smoke.

Anyway - I processed the last turn from Joe and sent it off last night. Here is a bit on the DEC 9 turn.

But my TFs and searches are coming up with enemy TFs fleeing from the Philippines.

This was nice. Joe sortied the BB Luzon, an older BB to be sure, to go after my invasion TFs that were prepping to land on the northern tip of the PI. My search saw the TF (reported as a CA and couple of DDs…) so I pulled my amphibious TF back and ran in a SCTF of two CA and two DD. I pounded that BB good - heavy fires, lotsa hits. I smiled my evil Axis smile as I watched the naval combat.




And in other exciting news, Tarawa falls to the glorious Imperial Japanese.

Johnny had the straight of that. But the fires have been worse in recent years. I came to CA in 86 and moved to the town of Bishop in 2001. This has been the worst for smoke and fire in my neck of the woods for as long as I've been here.

The movie starts out with the RO-63 tapping an HDML with a torpedo. Glug-glug-glug.

At Tinian, Joe gets in a successful night-time bombardment that catches some of my aircraft on the airfield. I can see Joe using his FP as spotters. That's good; it shows me that Joe has at least been around the block a few times and knows some of the tricks of the trade.

So I also get an amphibious invasion started at Miri. Near Koggala. And the U-112 taps the AMC Pansy with a torpedo and then escapes detection.

I have been sweeping Manila\Clark for the last few turns and will continue for another 3-4 turns just to insure Joe doesn't try to run aircraft up close enough to try hitting my AmTFs that are landing troops on the north tip of the PI.

I bombed Hong Kong ground forces to put some disablements into the ground forces. Later my ground forces, led by the 38th Div., knock the fort down from level 3 to level 2.

I also capture Aparri in the PI and capture Kota Bharu in Malaya with a fierce Japanese Shock Attack!
