I am doing my part!

It has been a real slog to get from 700,000 to 800,000 posts. The forum have been somewhat dormant since, like, January 2016?

I've had occasion recently to go back and look at some topics from the 2012-2013 era. In those days the threads often went to many pages, and the posts were longer, more analytical, and often more thoughtful than recently. A lot of old-timers who have since exited. Also, many topics re the game were still being hashed out; they are now canon and rarely discussed.

These days, except for a few popular AARs, the forum doesn't take long to read. Compared to the rest of the Matrix library AE is rush-hour. But it's not what it once was.

I consider myself still relatively new and still learning. Since I do look some of the old posts and get questions answered while also learning new things, I don't have to ask as many moronic questions.

I consider you one of the "new thoughtful." We need more.

If the search function were better I think more new folks would delve into the past to a greater degree, and there would be fewer of the same-old-same-old questions.

Thank you. Sometimes it just requires a new look at things to find a different way of doing things. Of course, we do things a bit different where I am since there were many new people who settled here instead of migrating from other parts of the United States.

Well, as you note, we no longer have much in the way of dev support. So, topics are now basically: "this is the way it is..." 5 years ago, we will still getting things adjusted. Michael has moved on, Termy rarely drops in, JWE banished, … when was the last time anyone saw Joe around? I could run the list another 20 names or more ….

Well, maybe the money is not coming in like it used to so they moved on to other things. With the scenario editor, people can modify/make scenarios but unless there is a new version the developers might be focusing their attention elsewhere. So maybe the only way to get the developers back would be to ask for a new version or add/update the existing one into a new package and not as an update free of charge.

Witp:AE was an enhancement built on top of Grigsby's Witp. Grigsby is on record as saying he would never make a game like Witp again and that it was insane to make it given the level of detail and work required.

Hopefully, someone else will come along willing to make the Witp2...or, more importantly, finance it.

Some day, some computer whiz who loves the Pacific will craft a game that will supersede AE. Until then, there's years and possibly decades of good gaming left. Probably, an incompatible new operating system will kill the game before interest truly wanes.

With a game of this age, we've suffered some Forumite attrition over the last years. Last year, there seemed to be a sudden influx of newcomers. I figured this was due to a drought in good new games and the fact that the AE forum has remained so robust. Folks noticed and were inspired to give it a try. A lot of those folks have come and gone, with but a few lingering to become part of the present-day backbone of the forum.

We've lost a lot of folks but there are still many old-timbers and quality newcomers here. I still enjoy the forum immensely.

As for the game, there's no doubt about it. When my game with Obvert winds down, I plan to start a new game against some salty old sea dog (maybe John III, if he is finished buffing his caboose). Of course, that's if the Lord is willing and the creek don't rise.

I enjoy your AARs, even the talk about the woods and trees. Some of the walks that you go on might put me in the hospital . . .

I am still learning the game (but who isn't, maybe Alfred?) and the computer always gives up in 1943 so it is insightful to read about what goes on against two good players. I want to try the Japanese against the computer to get a better idea of what they can do before I even try a PBEM. I might even do an AAR if people would want it.

Yes, we're there (Edit: I think this by CaptBeefheart was it)!

I think the departure of the devs has much to do with the disappearance of truly detailed discussion. These days a not-readily-answered-question is usually met by much conjecture followed by Alfred who gives some hints or links to threads from the golden forum era. These threads than sometimes give the answer, but often not completely. I believe this state of things keeps some people from even asking the type of questions that led to triple digit post counts in the past. As somebody who joined after this era, I sometimes look at the old threads and think: Wish I had been there.

Yet I like to thank all the actives that make this forum the place the way it is: Interesting and thoroughly enjoyable.
