Since it seems that my interest is shifting to the wars between Finland and the U.S.S.R., could anyone reccomend any good quotes or sites with quotes in English from Field Marshall Mannerheim for use in my sig? Thanks!

Mannerheim never was a great speaker. He grew up in a swedish speaking family and spent a major part of his life abroad. As a result his finnish was far from perfect and sounded quite funny (Mannerheim's bad finnish is still a joke in in Finland).

So Mannerheim is not remembered so much for what he said, but for what he did. We Finns think that talking is an overrated way of communication, anyway.

I have one quote for you though. This one is from Mannerheims first general order of the day to the armed forces, after the start of the winter war.

"We fight for home, faith and fatherland". I think that pretty well sums up what the winter war was all about for Finland.

Even the Mannerheim-homepage (http://www.mannerheim.fi) is a bit sparse with quotes. Just about the only thing that can be found are his orders of the day for the troops (available in Finnish and Swedish):
