Defense value updated by terrain modifier ?

I have just begun playing TOAW IV and wonder if the defense value is dynamically calculated each turn, taking into account the terrain and level of entrenchment the unit is in or if those modifications apply under the hood ?

It depends upon what you have displayed on the counter. There are some options that do apply terrain effects to the display.
