spinning up a VM for AE

Has anyone experimented around w/ running AE on a vm with an older version of windows to get around the win10 issues? I ask more for trying to play BTR which seems to have the same issues AE has w/ win10 but I can't get the same things that work for AE to work in BTR so I thought about winding up a Windows 7/Server 2008R2 VM. Just would need to see about getting an iso somewhere. Thoughts/issues anyone has come across?

Works just fine. [:D]
Win98 has some issues with drawing DirectX graphics (or it might have been the early version of VMWare) but WITP-AE runs perfectly under XP in the latest versions of Oracle VirtualBox (
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads)
Download of an iso isn't an issue but the serial number might be. [:'(]
Have fun.
By the way, Have you tried running BTR under DXWnd??? Works well with Win8.1. [8D]

The 512 MB RAM limit in Win 98 is going to make the game a tight fit in memory, but it should run under an NT based OS with a 4 GB RAM limit.

I have a similar problem. This is what my computer geek son recommends. He's a developer and has to test his stuff with old OS's.
Virtual machine:

An XP image from Microsoft:

I haven't tried this yet, as I'm too much of a wimp, but I'd love to find out how it works for you.

I just got back into the new BTR from the old Talonsoft version & noticed it had the same issues w/ Win10 as AE did when they patched it but again all same things that worked for AE to make it run faster didn't work for BTR. I was thinking that a Win7 version VM should be fine w/ maybe 1g as this would probably only be for BTR so don't need to assign much to it. I do work in IT but not a geek by any means & just a jack of all trades server admin type on Linux/Windows servers ex mainframe operator trying to survive in a server based world till retirement so I can play w/ my 2800baud modem dialing in to AOL [:)]

Reg - where did you get your Win XP iso from? Not sure if I have my version of it on disk to use as my laptop that I had it for probably was preinstalled & didn't come w/ disks. I know I can get Server 2008R2 & later from work probably but not sure they'll work. I've got a version of Ubuntu loaded up but haven't worked much w/ Ubuntu though I've worked many Linux servers at work where most of our servers our Linux based.

My copy of XP is genuine which I bought ages ago.
The XP image can be extracted into a VM just as bilbow describes in his post above (I tried it and it works) but without a serial number it will expire in 30 days and require you to reinstall (wiping out any work you have done to that point). OK for testing but not a long term VM solution. I didn't try activating it.
You can download current iso images for Win 7, 8 and 10 from Microsoft at
https://www.microsoft.com/software-download but again you will need a serial number.

Thanks Reg, I might be able to get a version of 8 since that is my current desktop (since upgraded to 10) but should be able to get serial # from it.

Just remember, "Like a physical machine, a virtual machine running any version of Microsoft Windows requires a valid license." This is the advantage of Wine which doesn't actually use any MS code.
Review your licence terms and remember that Ebay can be your friend here.....

Win 8.1. but that is irrelevant. As long as the virtual machine runs on the host operating system the client operating system will be oblivious to the outside.

I know that, it generally is ... but performance of running a WM XP on a Linux/OSX/etc is different. In fact, I can see a performance difference btwn running the VM on win10 and Winserver.
Thanks

OK - I did install ReactOS and then our beloved WITP. Getting a lot of crashes but that maybe due to my machine. Anyone has experience on this?
