Greatest WWII Soundtrack?

After twisting the tail of one of our most esteemed players with the Movie Thread, I thought perhaps a serious thread on Best WWII Soundtracks might be appropriate.

I love movies and soundtracks so this might be interesting for people to contribute on. The trigger for this thread is my computer's music shuffler played three great pieces back-to-back-to-back: Main Title of Schindler's List, The Patton March, and then A Bridge Too Far. All three--in their own way--were excellent.

Nominees please?

Schindler's List is excellent but I guess my first choice would be Wear Eagles Dare. Enemy at the Gates and A Bridge Too Far are also very good.

One problem with choosing a Greatest Soundtrack (and is also pertinent for a Greatest Album choice) is; does one pick a soundtrack that contains one brilliant track - and a host of less memorable ones OR is it better to have a soundtrack without an out and out blockbuster track - but that contains a high number of more than okay tracks? By definition I guess its the latter as this is about the soundtrack rather than an individual track. Sometimes you get both [:)]

I would need to ponder on this but off the top of my head the two obvious choices are:

- Battle of Britain - notable tracks include:

I. Luftwaffe March (Aces High) - music starts at about 0:30

VI Epilogue - Music begins at about 0:15. Beautiful.

- Operation Daybreak - sadly not available as the masters were lost and the composer does not believe it economical to re-record but this would take some beating to be honest.

Ambush Scene - music starts at about 0:33:

Final Scene (make sure you have your kleenex to hand for this) [:(]
- music starts at about 2:15:

I bet BBfanboy thought of the scene with the biplane and it triggered the thought, "WWI."

Isn't that the movie that Elaine hated in "Seinfeild," so Mr. Peterman fired her?

Speaking of which: wasn't Seinfeld caught making out at a theater showing Schindler's List?

I always thought the main title music to Force 10 from Navarone was excellent.

You are right - I only saw the movie in bits and pieces while I was busy with other things and thought it was set in WWI. The women's outfits also seemed to be rather turn of the Century to me rather than WWII era. My bad for misunderstanding that. The English Patient is a valid choice!

Speaking of music, the main theme to "Band of Brothers" really gets me. An overall mournful note (as befits a series showing so much carnage and loss) with a rising note of glorious celebration of the achievements of these soldiers. In the end I feel sad about the cost of war and hopeful that the brave men who fought it will find other ways to settle our differences.

Yah, I know it isn't a movie but it is at least as good as anything done by the movie studios.

I saw that episode before I saw the movie and I have to agree with Elaine. "Quit telling your stupid story about the stupid desert, and just die already! DIE!"

I listen to Country-Western tunage but I play it backwards. That way I get back my trucks, planes, troops, and tanks. [:D]
