Late War oddities

Mainly for Bill I think:

Some late war strangeness in 1944-45...

1. I switched sides after my successful Sealion as the Axis. The first thing that the Axis AI does is completely evacuate all of the Italian units from Southern England that I had carefully placed there to stop Allied landings. However, it kept the German units in Scotland that were trying to finish off conquest of the island. Strange choice.....

2. Spain DOW'd Portugal while most of their units were in France. This offered me the easy landing there to start D-Day. Strange choice....

3. When the Allies took London the UK moved their capital back there...OK. Then when they took Manchester the UK moved their capital there.....strange. When Allies took Edinburgh the UK moved capital there.......weirdness.

4. Germany made no attempt to position units in Normandy etc. They only kept garrisons in cities. Should the AI not anticipate a possible landing there?

5. France liberated and on the next turn Vichy Algeria surrendered. Why would they not just join the Allies?

6. If UK moves capital to Canada then the Canadian DD that arrives in Halifax as part of destroyers for bases can NEVER be placed. There should maybe an option to disband a unit for 50% value on the reinforcement pop-up.

7. After Germany surrendered Italy fought on for three turns. I would suggest that Italian morale would drop to zero when Germany goes down.

Just some observations....

There is a lot of stuff that has been railroaded to Weirdsville by scripts that have not been tested, especially in the later stages of the scenarios. I suspect there are even a few that have not gone beyond mid-game.

Here's another suspect: What fires the "Build Atlantic Wall" for the Axis? Is it dependent on Vichy being accepted? If the Axis player does not accept Vichy, I've noted that the Atlantic Wall does not get built. (I could be wrong about this, but that has been my experience after two plays against the AI.)

The AI becomes too predictable, and human opponents - especially the experienced sharks - find too many loopholes that make a mockery of historical considerations.

On the other hand, the game is still a heroic effort and worth the investment.

Excellent assessment of the game. The PBEM loopholes should be easy to fix.

Still enjoyable game.

Thanks, and for the Atlantic Wall it might be that the Decision requires France to have surrendered on the date it is due to fire (1st January 1942). That is of course less likely if Vichy isn't formed, and might be why you've not seen it in the games you mentioned.

It also requires London and Bristol to be in Allied hands (i.e. no Sea Lion), and Calais, Amiens, Le Havre and Brest to be in Axis hands on that date, with no Allied units within 5 hexes of either Brest or Paris.

If all the conditions are met then it will fire.

I am a bit confused about point 5 though, as I cannot see any script to make Vichy Algeria surrender in such an eventuality. There are scripts to move it towards the Allies when France is liberated, but they do of course require Vichy Algeria to be neutral at the time.

If it has entered the war on either side then the situation is far more complicated, and best left to both sides to fight it out as no amount of scripting would create a perfect result there.
