Hi,

Do subs recon islands/bases in the hex that they loiter in? If I send a sub to wake island will it update my intel on how large the port and/or air fields are?

Thanks

There is a small chance that having a sub in the hex will increase the DL by a point or maybe two. Their biggest benefit is getting intel on shipping moving in and out of the hex or minefields in the hex. [X(]

They can also give an indication of the current weather in the hex (at beginning of turn) which might be useful in deciding when to send in air strikes or naval bombardments. And if you do send in air strikes, the sub might rescue some valuable pilots.

As BB points out, and it needs to be stressed, the more subs you have in a hex when a friendly airstrike comes into the hex and does combat, the more shot-down pilots you will recover.

There may be mines though in the hex so we place our bets and take our chances.

You have current information about any port/airfield sizes I believe. At least AI games operations report tells you all the bases that increased their port/airfield during the turn

Subs alone can only detect TFs and mostly only presence, not composition. However, larger Japanese submarines have Float Planes onboard. You can send them on recon mission. Just make sure, to set them high, to not get caught by CAP.

Their recon skill levels are really low at start and they would need to be trained up. They can't get above CAP either. Max altitude is too low.
