Saw this trailer for an upcoming movie that seems like a CMANO wet dream

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAhcDHRZOak

Just curious if the CMANO afficionados here can identify the various vessels and weapons systems depicted?

Nice to see a new naval movie, hopefully it's entertaining, looks more Hollywood angled though, so have the popcorn ready. Regarding the trailer music, they pick it from a library of music when editing, there's a lot of film trailers with the same music out there. Not the same director though, this is a South African director, last directed a film called Avenged and previous to that Spud 1 and 2 that had John Cleese.

Looks pretty 'rah-rah' Hollywood type to me, but to respond to the OP:

I'm pretty sure the shot of the high speed Russian ship was an Udaloy, perhaps an Udaloy II
There was a shot of an RBU-6000 firing
The land based missiles lined up on the dock in a distinctly non-tactical (throw away all the advantage of hiding) were Kh-35 (SSC-1) http://www.military-today.com/missiles/bal.htm
I'm not good at Sub recognition but the Santa Fe was mentioned (sunk I think) and she is an LA class, so the heros are probably on a Virginia class

Looked like the latest PHOTEX from RIMPAC (with a massive fleet all lined up in ranks) in there as well...

That's a start I guess[:D]

Hero Sub is a Virgina (Chin array gives it away)
0:14 - Akula III (Akula Hull/Torpedo tubes, lack of towed array housing)
0:45 - Udaloy DDG (Probably an Udaloy II since it looks like there is only one turret)
0:47 - MiG-29's of some flavor.
0:50 - Udaloy II
0:50 - 3xAS-365s (I think these are supposed to be Ka-60s, but they have a nosewheel)
1:29 - An-26, I think.
1:45 - Same Akula
2:04 - Udaloy II

That was fun.

This is neither Udaloy I or II. This is kinda mix of real Udaloy pr.1155 and Krivak pr.1135 with RBU launchers at forecastle.

Anyone else unable to see the name "Udaloy" without hearing it pronounced in the computer voice from Gary Grigsby's North Atlantic 86'?

OK

Saw this movie last night. Was planning to see Bohemian Rhapsody but there was a mix up and several decided to see this instead.

OMG! Started the night expecting to see some Rock Ballads and ended up seeing a Comic Opera! I won't say that this is as bad as Pearl Harbor - I don't think that's possible - but it is not far off. What a shame.

I listened to a Jeffery Lyons review on News Radio 88 (NYC) that was not bad. Was not great either. Of course he was not reviewing it from a military perspective. But if I remember correctly, he questioned the whole premise of the movie and if you get passed that then the "special effects" might make it worth seeing for some movie goers. Says it is not a "date movie". I think he also said the actors did a good job with the material they had to work with. I am going to wait to watch it on demand at home.

Was it "cheesy-fun bad" or just bad?

Some of the acting was OK, some was atrocious - but the plot and the script certainly didn't help the actors. I couldn't get past the premise I guess - it was laughable. The CGI was good, and they obviously had someone who knew a bit about ships and subs etc - but that advice must have been overruled more times than not. As far as dating - its probably about now - just based on the ships & subs involved.

There were some videos plucked from the internet of a RIMPAC PhotEx, 18 I think, and also the 2017 gathering of three CVNs in WestPac and the Russian Navy parade earlier this year. Gimmi a break.

I was amazed at the new teleport capability displayed by both navies - from the confined spaces of a harbor to open sea and back again. Fascinating stuff!

That's a couple hours I won't get back. If you watch it on demand, when there is nothing else to do, it might be OK...

It really bugs me that with the very few movies produced about military subjects, stuff like this pollutes a very shallow pool.

I would call it just bad, but I donno, some might call it cheesy-fun bad. That's a matter of taste I guess. I call 'Fury' - just bad, but 'Kelly's Heroes' cheesy-fun bad.

A movie that doesn't take itself too seriously = cheesy fun. Somehow, I think someone thought this movie was serious, and to me - that's bad.

Pretty interesting analysis by retired nuclear submariner:

I think it would be of interest for most CMANO players - it looks like lots of stuff in the movie is taken from real world. Ofc, there is lots of bulls..t too :)

That was interesting - thanks. I must say that I enjoyed that more than the the movie itself - but perhaps I'm being a bit too hard on it.

Cheers

As an ex US Navy Submariner. This movie is horrible. In fact it is really two bad movies wrapped in one neither one with any redeeming qualities. My only good thing to say is as I have the AMC version of movie pass it didn't cost me anything but the 2 hours of time. Super unrealistic sub warfare. super stupid antagonists for the special forces part.

Super simple solution that would have prevented the whole action sequence...show the damn video to the world.

Bad acting. bad script. bad action sequences. bad special effects.

Gary Oldman is in movie for about 5 minutes total even though movie poster makes it out like he is a major character

Another review. It talks a little about how the submarine set was constructed:

https://www.popularmechanics.com/cultur ... er-review/

"he built an entire submarine set atop a massive gimbal that would allow actors to move around in much the same way a real submarine's crew would while maneuvering in a combat environment."

Generally enjoy naval action movies however, based on all the forum reviews, won’t be seeing this one!

"Sighted sub, sank same."

Attributed (perhaps incorrectly) to Aviation Machinist's Mate First Class Mason for his actions on January 28, 1942.
