TOAW IV vs WitE

OK, i still don't have TOAW IV but I'm considering buying it ( just waiting for the sale ;) In the meantime, I'm wondering how is it different from War in the East? Obviously the scope is different, but if you just compared the Eastern Front scenarios. What the games do differently, in which aspect one is better than the other. Your input is welcomed.

Toaw can go into other battle arenas outside of the Eastern Front.

both are very good. war in the east game that might take awhile to learn but its worth it TOAW IV will let you get playing right away it will keep you very busy it all depends what you want from the games

To be honest on the basic level WitE is just move and fight, attach and reattach units to HQ, keep you supply in order and that's it. You really don't need to know all the things that happen under the hood. To me the biggest merit of it, is the historical fidelity. Would you say TOAW IV is less complex? I've seen posts where people had problems understanding some mechanics of the game.

it's just easy to learn, a bit more task to master
for me the big difference is time being taken in effect
in TOAW, you can't create a hole in a defense line and then exploit without paying the time taken

Each game or system has it's particular flair. I am no fan of long scenarios or monster campaign. TOAW is best suited for, as it implies, operational level. WitE or WitP AE are great for year long campaigns, incl. production etc. VR's DC series adds some RPG flavour to it's system. All are great games IMHO.

Get both, I think having these two titles is worth it in the long run.

I think the biggest and most crucial difference is how turns are played in each game. This is probably what you should read about or watch some gameplay first before buying TOAW. Its turn management is fairly unusual and might take some getting used to. WitE is more traditional in this area, more like other wargames.

WitE uses a movement style that is anything but traditional in operational wargames.

Thanks for your input. Wouldn't it be easier to make the game turn-based WEGO, instead of turn based that tries to work like WEGO?

Please explain 'tries to work like WEGO'. Not quite understanding that.

Imho, TOAW's Drang nach Osten scenario is far superior to WitE.

The former is a regimental level excersize in mobile warfare and combined arms operations, and it just oozes quality and historical accuracy.

The latter is divisional level, and it feels quite... arcade to me. There is something not right with the map scale, unit size and weekly turns.

Divisional level Barbarossa scenarios are not as good as WitE, again imho.

TOAW: Any scale. Armies to regiments. WITE: Divisions.
TOAW: Any time per time as the scenario provides. WITE: 1 week 1 turn.
So TOAW is a better choice for campaigns since it provides much more details. If you play the Soviet counterattack in Stalingrad with WITE, it means u must complete the surrounding of 6th Army in 1 turn. But in TOAW u can look into how Red Army launches its fierce attack.

But in a larger scale, especially about a total simulation of east front or big campaigns like Operation Blau, I would choose WITE. WITE has better supply system (and an even better one in WITE2), production system. And only in WITE, a Soviet player could organize a strategic reserve force. Also, the time stamp system in TOAW would cause too mach work to do in a single turn.

TOAW and WITE are different games. The major 1 I kept it till now is that: TOAW is a system for so many scenarios as the imagination of players could reach, WITE is a system designed for Eastern Front from the beginning of development.

These 2 games are my favourite war-sims but I like WITE the most. It's attention to detail is just mental and finally it feels like i'm commanding a real army from the era but if you like short scenarios then the 2 dlc's are a must and it still gets updated.
TOAW has less micro-management and more variety with some pretty complex scenarios but man do I hate having to deal with all that artillery every round.


In fact I find it hard to recommend one over the other but I think maybe you should buy TOAW first and then WITE.

It would be a different game. Given how large movement can be, and the unit counts, I'm not sure how well it would work. The AI would have to be better for it to work.

Maybe its time to consider splitting TOAW into two games. The existing IGYO game at Rgt and above, and a new WEGO game at Rgt and below.
