Hi,

I try to be kinda self sufficient, but my Google-Fu skills are not helping me with this search, so I thought that I might get some assistance right here.
I'm looking for some resources on the "Practical Rate of Fire" for WW2 small arms, up to HMG's.

I know this has been done, somewhere.
Can some kind soul guide me towards some relevant web sites, or steer me to a relevant thread here on Matrix.

I don´t have the book myself, but Iam in the middle of learning the rules for Chad Jensen´s "Fighting Formations GD" by GMT. On the play book there are some suggetion/resource reads by Chad, and among the books is this one...

The info you look for is right there.
Rates of fire are to the right. Range is across the bottom.
And, you can break the weapons down into each category if you wish.

What you describe is the Cyclical RoF, that's the "Theoretical Best" Rate of Fire of a weapon.
It has little to do with reality.
It's very deceptive, and shouldn't be used to rate a weapons effectiveness.


Wait... let's use the MG42 as an example:
The cyclical rate of fire of this weapon is something stupid like 1200 rounds per minute.
However .....
They have to aim at their target.
The barrel had to be replaced every 250 rds (or close to it), that's 12+ seconds if you're squezin' that trigger hard.
They usually had only a couple of spare barrels available (pls correct me if I'm wrong)
Those things took a while to cool down.
It takes a few seconds to switch out barrels, longer if you lose the oven mitts.
Re-acquire target.
Reload the weapon
etc etc etc.
From what I can find, some folks figure that weapon could safely and reliably provide accurate fire of about 200+ rds per minute.
I just checked, Wikipedia now says the practical RoF was 153 (that's an odd number) rpm.

Aimed, effective use of the weapon without breaking it (usually due to overheating)
THAT's the "Practical RoF" that I'm looking for.

Another one.
Wikipedia tells me the (cyclical) Rate of Fire of the M1 Garand is 40 - 50 rounds per minute.
I have a doc from the US Army that tells me that a user of the M1 Garand should be expected to fire between 16 to 24 aimed rds per minute. At best. That's it.

I know that this information is out there. It has to be. Out of all the WW2 games this outfit has in stock someone must have researched this.
Tell me I'm not the first.

Anyways, that's my hope.
