When clicking buttons in the interface, they just look 'flat', they dont seem to have a press action to them. I am playing the Steam version.....is this also true in the regular version? I thought I remembered older versions having the illusion of being pressed....

I agree. It's a strange sensation. The graphics files seem to have been designed for a changed button look when hovered upon or clicked, but it doesn't work.
